When Lovers Become Strangers

Another sad one-shot. A follow up of "The Price of Fame" one-shot. This one is based on Cher's song "When lovers become strangers". It's directed to a man but that doesn't mean we can change our own perspective of it for this. I hope you will hate that you loved reading this haha. Enjoy!!!

Cher was looking at Meryl talking to Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt across the room. It was like a recreation of a Devil Wears Prada scene. She was so beautiful, dressed in a strapless long sleeve beige gown and her hair down. Meryl was so close to her yet still out of reach. Cher didn't know why she agreed to attend this event, she knew Meryl was gonna be here. When Cher saw her ex wife enter the room, she even forgot what event it was. It had been a year since the divorce and it still hurt. Cher remembered that day too well, that day broke her. It was Robert Camilletti all over again. Meryl couldn't handle both their weight of being a famous couple so she told Cher she wanted a divorce. It was a breakthrough on the news and people were still talking about it.

Cher went into depression after Meryl left the house. She cried herself to sleep many nights. For days, Cher wouldn't get out of her room, eat or sleep. Her family was worried was worried about her for the beginning of everything. They were all mad at Meryl for not being able to handle the situation. Truth be told, Cher was angry at her too for that. People say you hate once you have loved. Although, Cher could never hate Meryl, she still loved her even if it was killing her inside. Cher was trying to comprehend how the hell did things got to where they got. They had spent 36 years together and finally came out to the world and married for 4 years. All the laughs, the talks, the love, the special moments that they shared. Where did it all go wrong?. Sure they were big icons how was it possible that their reputation got in the way of their marriage?.

"You know, Cher hasn't taken her eyes off of you since she saw you" Anne said to Meryl from the other side of the room.

Meryl quickly glance at Cher and back to her friends "Darling it has been a year since your divorce, you must be able to cope being in the same room with her again" Emily told her

"We haven't seen or talk to each other since we signed the divorce papers, so a year. I don't even know why she's here. I don't know how much longer I can resist the urge of going to her." Meryl said nervously

"Meryl if you love her, why did you ask for divorce?" Anne asked

"I don't want to talk about it, I'm fine. I haven't been so relaxed in a while" Meryl said

"But you feel lonely? You miss her" Emily says

"Nobody will understand the pressure I went through. She's Cher, she's big, everybody on out tail. It was driving me crazy" Meryl said

"Isn't that kind of selfish? I mean, you are both big stars and are always going to be big news" Anne said

Meryl sighed "like I said, nobody will understand. I'm gonna go get some air" she said and walked away.

Meryl went to the balcony, leaned on it and took a deep breath. She was trying to prevent herself from crying yet again. Nobody understood how she felt, her family scolded her for divorcing Cher. Meryl felt that it was the only option she had. All her career she knew how big she was, that was the problem. Meryl loved Cher, with all her heart. She was the love of her life so telling her she wanted to divorce her was the hardest thing she ever did. The weight they both carried was too much for her. Yes, maybe it was selfish but Meryl was really sensitive. All the cameras 24/7 and most of the interviews were about her and Cher's marriage, there was no privacy. She didn't have much privacy before but because Cher was also as big, it was overwhelmed. Every time Meryl tried to concentrate on her work, someone came to ask about Cher and about them. It was the same for Cher but she seemed to manage it pretty well. Not Meryl and it annoyed her that she couldn't. At first the attention was quite nice because they felt accepted but now it had become irritating to her.

Asking Cher for divorce had never been the plan but she couldn't take it anymore. Cher didn't understand what she was going through so she felt alone. The first weeks after the divorce Meryl really had a hard time. She felt guilty because she felt free of all the weight. Despite all the commotion after the divorce went public, a few months after it had subsided. Unfortunately for her, inside she didn't know how to feel. She was more relaxed but she missed Cher dearly, she loved her. Seeing her now, it came to mind everything that they had for 36 years and the 4 years after. During the time nobody knew about their relationship, Meryl wasn't feeling any pressure from anyone and she felt calm with Cher. They had been through so many good things together. Their love was strong, their love was pure, their love was theirs. Much to her dislike, her ex wife didn't see it that way. Seeing Cher now reminded her that they didn't have each other anymore, that they didn't share the same opinions or thoughts anymore. Where did it all go wrong?

Cher saw Meryl go to the balcony and was battling the urge to go outside. She looked at Pauly next to her but her best friend was talking to some people.

"I'm gonna go get some air Pauly" she said to her best friend

"Are you ok? Do you want me to go with you?" Pauly asked. Cher diverted her eyes to Meryl's direction. Pauly looked at the same direction and understood "Are you sure you want to do it? I don't want you to get hurt and if you see or talk to her and..."

"I'll be fine Paulette" Cher cut her in, Pauly nodded and she went outside

Cher got to the balcony, maintaining her distance with Meryl. She looked stunning under the moonlight. They hadn't seen or talk to each other in a year and she was trying to find the right words to say. Cher never went back on a relationship but Meryl was different than any other. Cher knew that it was Meryl who made the decision of leaving and that was upsetting, it was her choice. She didn't deny that if Meryl wanted her back, she would go to her without hesitation. The question was IF Meryl wanted her back. Cher got closer to her softly spoke.

"Hi" she said

Meryl jumped and when she saw Cher beside her, she felt jitters all over her body "Hi" she said shyly

"It's good to see you, it's been a while" Cher said

"I'm surprised to see you, this isn't your kind of event" Meryl said

"Well is always a good thing to start on new things" Cher told her smiling

"I heard you had a success on your tour" Meryl said

"Yeah although most of the time I wanted to be in bed, it was really hard for me to get up every day..." she paused for a moment "Meryl I-" she was starting to get closer

"What are you really doing here Cher?" Meryl asked backing away with her head down. She was trying her best to stay strong.

"I wanted to see you" Cher said, she reached for Meryl's hand and placed her own on top "I've miss you"

Meryl turned her back to her, she was feeling a tornado of emotions right now "I'm sorry it had to be this way" she started walking walking away but was stopped by an arm wrapping around her chest.

"Why did it had to come to this? To us separating each other" Cher asked whispering in her ear "Meryl I love you"

Meryl was starting to shake for being so close to Cher again "I love you too" she said

Cher turned Meryl around so they could look into each other's eyes "Then why couldn't we make it like we promised each other?"

"If you didn't understand then, you won't understand now" Meryl said, her eyes watering

"Please don't leave me" Cher said in tears and caressing Meryl's face

Meryl took Cher's hand from her cheek and kissed it "I'm sorry, bye Cher" Meryl turned around and with tears streaming down her face she walked away.

Cher leaned against the balcony, letting the tears fall. She tried but failed. Even if they loved each other, both Cher and Meryl knew that now nothing was ever going to be the same.
