"I think that girl over there is staring at me," Cul said as she pushed mashed potatoes around her lunch tray with a plastic fork. "But I'm sure I've never seen her before."

"What? Where?" Rin leaned forward.

Cul made a vague pointing gesture, and Rin turned around. Several high school cafeteria tables away, a girl sat alone with no lunch. Light blond hair fell in almost white waves over her slight shoulders, and she rested her chin in long, knit-together fingers. She was looking straight at them.

Or maybe past them?

"Creepy," said Rin, facing Cul again. "I wonder what her problem is."

"Whatever it is, I hope it's not with me," Cul said. "I'd rather not hash it out with a complete stranger."

"What, do you think she's gonna start a fight?" Rin laughed.

Len sat next to them, looking like he'd rather be anywhere else.

"Wow, Len," Rin said, leaning her elbow on the table. "Sitting with us again. Your new 'friends' ditch you?"

"Shut up." He punctuated his statement by popping open his soda can. Based on his diet, the kid probably lived off the vending machine.

"Ooh, touchy," Rin mimped. Cul snickered.

"Rin Mirane, I swear," Len growled. "If you don't shut your mouth—"

"You'll what?" Rin gave a steely glare.

Len stared back for a moment before turning away and slurping his drink.

"Thought so." Rin carded a hand through her hair. To Cul, Rin started to say something about fondue, but she didn't hear.

Cul glanced over at the white-haired girl again. Yup, still staring. Did she have eyelids?

"Seriously though, Rin," Cul leaned closer. "That girl is freaking me out. Do you think we should move?"

"Well..." Rin turned around again and Cul did the same, then noticed a boy approaching from the same direction.

"Hey Cul, quick question." He stopped at the edge of their table. "Do you know where Fukase is? He isn't responding to any of my texts."

Cul stared as the boy talked, trying to place him. His scruffy blond hair and round freckled face didn't ring any bells, but he knew her name? "What?"

"He wasn't in homeroom this morning and I was just wondering."

The two girls simply blinked at him for a minute. Cul couldn't help feeling awkward at how the boy looked at her, expectant, but not directly, like he was talking to someone behind her. If he hadn't said her name, she would've thought he was.

"Who?" Rin broke the silence with a short laugh. "Do you know a Fukase, Cul?"

"Uh, I don't think so. Do I know you?" she asked the boy.

"What?" He seemed to go blank for a moment. "Fukase is your brother."

At this, Rin openly laughed in the boy's face. "Oh my God, what? Cul, do you have a lost brother you didn't tell me about?"

"I've never heard that name before." Cul smiled out of confusion. "But really, who are you?"

"Um, I'm Oliver..." He trailed off as if he wasn't sure he should've said that. Looking closer, Cul noticed a small cloud covering the pupil in his left eye. Weird. So he was actually looking at her.

"Well, Oliver, you obviously have the wrong person, so," Rin waved her hand. "Bye!"

"I must've gotten people mixed up. I guess I'm just a little out of it today." He wavered a little, than left.
