Xyla

"You really don't have to do that. But thanks anyway." I said grabbing the card from the counter just before Julie could pick it up. I held it in the air for a moment just waiting for him to take it back but he didn't. He just stood there with a stoic expression on his face. Something about the way his eyes were burrowing into my own made me feel a bit uncomfortable. Not in a creepy way. Things just felt so intense between us. But why?

I placed his card into the pocket of his coat. Turning around to face Julie who had the biggest goofiest grin plastered across her pale face. I dug into my purse in search of my wallet. "No really, I insist." He said reaching around me and placing his credit card on the counter yet again. Earning a slight scold from Xavier. Who sometimes forgot that I was the older sibling and not vice versa. He couldn't stand it when a guy tried to push up on me in front of him. "How's it going big man?" He asked turning his attention away from me and to Xavier.

"What's up?" Xavier replied dryly before rolling his eyes and looking to me. I bulged my eyes at him due to his amount of rudeness before returning my attention to the kind stranger behind us. Just as Julie finished ringing us up with his credit card of course.

"Look ...." I started before waving my hand in the air.

"Quincy." He said softly. His tone a bit different than before.

"Look Quincy you really didn't have to do ..." I started only to have him cut me off.

"But I wanted to." He added his tone still soft but laced with a hint of confidence. His eyes still burrowing into mine. His face still stoic.

"And what exactly are you expecting in return? Because all I have to offer you is a kind thank you." I added. Causing Julie to harshly clear her throat. We knew each other very well given my frequent trips here for food and gas. She would always gush over how pretty she thought I was. And grill me for always turning away any guy who even dared to flirt with me. Quincy had obviously gained her support.

"Honestly?" He quizzed before a small grin spread across the left side of his mouth. Causing me to cut my eyes at him. I knew there was something. There was always something. "I expect for you not to have to worry about gas for a little while." Oh. I stared at him once again getting lost in his gaze. Finding a random feeling of tranquility sweep over me.

"Well in that case..." I turned around to fetch my bags. "Thanks Quincy." I said as Xavier stepped in between us purposely stepping on Quincy's feet on his way out. I shook my head barely holding back laughter before patting Quincy on the shoulder and heading out.

"X you really need to do better!" I yelled at Xavier's back as he opened the passenger side door. Referring to his earlier antics. He stuck his tongue out playfully before hopping in. That kid.

I opened the driver's side door and handed Xavier our bags. Before softly closing it and placing the gas pump into the tank. I sat against the side of the car as the gallons and price flickered across the screen. Briefly glancing at the doors of the gas station wondering what was taking Quincy so long to come out. I watched on as the numbers slowed before softly shaking my head feeling a bit foolish. I had just given this man the hardest time but now here I was hoping he'd resurface before I pulled off.

The pump stopped at 36.60. I pulled it from the tank and placed it back into it's holder. Looked towards the doors of the gas station and still no Quincy. I closed the tank and decided now was as a good a time as any to wash my windshield. I made my way around the pump and grabbed the windshield squeegee. Placing it against the windshield softly. Earning a bit of side eye from Xavier. I challenged his stare before wiping the squeegee back and forth a few times. Then swiftly turning it over to dry the window. Still no Quincy.

I huffed before walking back over to rewet it. "Xy what are you doing?" I asked myself aloud softly releasing the handle. That was a good question. I hadn't entertained a guy since my freshman year in high school and damn well didn't have the time to entertain one now.

Just then I heard loud laughter as Quincy exited the gas station. I watched as his smile seemed to engulf the entire length of his face. His over sized coat softly dragging behind him as the wind seemed to lift it up as if it were a cape. His eyes quickly zoomed in on me. I quickly avoided his stare. But not fast enough for him not to notice I myself had been staring.  I could feel his eyes on me. So I quickly grabbed the squeegee and headed for the opposite side of my car.

He softly stepped by me. As I began to wipe the passenger side with such vigor I even surprised myself. I peeked over my shoulder as he made his way to the driver's side of his car. Placing the gas pump into the tank and peering over toward me. I once again quickly adverted his gaze. Turning the squeegee over and slowly drying the window.

He just stood there glancing over at me occasionally. I needed him to say something. Anything. Anything to assure me that this feeling was indeed mutual. And that I wasn't making this all up in my head. This was so out of character for me. But for reasons I couldn't understand I felt like I needed him. Like he was quintessential to my existence.

But he wasn't budging. So I angrily marched the windshield squeegee back over to it's container. Lightly stomping back over to the driver's side of my car. Opening the door.

"Xyla!" He yelled just as I entered and grabbed the door to close it. I turned in my seat as did Xavier. Eager to hear what it was he had to say.

A/N

This is just getting started. The next chapter will be much longer.

This will be my first try at paranormal writing. But I'm confident you'll enjoy this just as much as the others.
