(A/n I don't think I mention this, but Ruby is currently 13 right now and Y/n is 15. Also they have been in Patch the entire time)

(Y/n POV)

While looking for Ruby I couldn't help being paranoid. I was running my semblance on overdrive, jumping at any movement what so ever.

I made my way to the docks and saw Ruby curled up on a bench crying. I sat down next to her and put my arm around her. She glanced at me for a second before shifting closer and relaxed.

Ruby: I-I was so scared Y-Y/n

Y/n: What did they do to you?

Ruby: I... T-They...

She started to shake a little and sob silently. Seeing her like this pulled at your heart for some reason.

Y/n: If you tell me what happened then I'll tell you how I lost my arm.. Deal?

You knew she was always curious about it. You've never told anyone about it, but you felt like she could be trusted.

Ruby: W-When I was around 3 my m-mom died. I don't have any memories of her, but the p-picture you found. My f-family started neglecting me and pushed me aside. When I turned 7 they started to hit me. At first it was just my dad, but eventually Raven and Yang joined it...

Ruby started to play with her wrists. I could guess why, but didn't interrupt.

Ruby... I-It got so bad at one point that I started c-c-cutting m-myself... It was like this for years until you found me..

This is why you didn't like humans. They don't care about others and do whatever they won't for their own selfish gain.

Y/n: Humans really are disgusting

Ruby flinched when you said that. You felt a little bad because you didn't mean her.

Y/n: Those bastards had no right to do that to you. Your a lot better then those animals

Ruby: I don't want to go back. I don't want them to take me

Y/n: Then let's go to Vale

(A/n Vale is a lot farther from Patch for plot reasons)

Ruby: R-Really?

Y/n: Yea it's far away and it's a big city so it would be hard to find us

Ruby: Thank you... for not leaving me

You both sat there in silence looking out at the ocean. The moon lit up the ocean, casting a dark blue glow.

Y/n: Ok I guess I have to tell you how I lost my arm now

Ruby perked up, but kept staring at the shattered moon's reflection in the water.

Y/n: About a year ago me and my dad were slaves in a Schnee dust mine. He always was optimistic about escaping and would work day in and out figuring out a way to. He was friends with almost every "miner" in our sector. He had plenty of help to make the perfect plan... sadly he was killed before we could go through with it...

I stare off into the shattered moon blankly. A few images of my fathers body and the soldier that shot him.

Y/n:...One of the others ratted out my dad and they executed him... When my dad's best friend, Zar found out he started a riot and gave me a chance to escape. He felt that if he helped me escape then he would honor my father. The riot ended up spreading to every sector...

Ruby: I remember them talking about it... they were disgusted that you guys would do that..

Y/n: As expected from humans... Anyways the military was called in full forces. They didn't hesitate to shoot us and killed off hundreds of us. Rubble fell on top of me when they started using explosives and trapped my left arm. One of the soldiers was prepared to kill me... a trapped boy would couldn't even move, but Zarzar killed him before he could kill me.

I subconsciously rub the area where you arm meets your prosthetic and shiver slightly.

Y/n: More solders were coming towards us.. we both knew we would die if I was stuck.... when he looked at me I couldn't tell what he was thinking, but when I saw his eyes I understood what was goin to happen... The pain I felt when his pickaxe tore my arm off couldn't compare to running away from Zar.. the others...

Ruby: I.. They said only 10 people escaped... while the other 2000...

I duly nod. I was lost in my own thoughts thinking about everyone at the mine. I barely realized Ruby had started hugging me. The look she had on her face was full of sadness and sympathy, something no one ever shows me.

I don't know if it was the beauty of the night or just the felling of being cared about again, but I couldn't stop myself from leaning down and planting a light kiss on her soft rosy lips.

(A/n A big timeskip happens after this so the next chapter Ruby is gonna be 16 and Y/n will be 18)
