Chapter 2

Autumn’s POV:

Have you ever felt as if what you had known all this time wasn't even real? That’s exactly what I felt about Jasper right now. Who was Jasper Faulkner really, anyway? This question lingered in my mind all day as I continued to look through his photos. I really needed to talk to Marcus about all of this because he seemed like he would know more about this Santa Monica trip than I did. But before I confront Marcus, I had to visit Jasper to check on how he’s doing and possibly ask the doctors about his brain cancer. I lifted myself off the couch I was currently seated on and put the box into my closet before leaving my house.

“Hey.” I say as I lean against the door frame. Marcus was sitting beside Jasper and he looks up at me with a grim smile on his face.

“Did you know?” I blurt out without warning. He raises his eyebrows up in surprise.

“Sorry, I didn't mean to say it like that.” I quickly apologize. He smiles and stands up.

“Nah its fine, Autumn,” he lets out a breath and makes his way toward me. He takes my hand and guides me out of the room.

“So, did you?” I ask softly, looking down at my feet. He closes his eyes and he runs his hand through his hair multiple times before answering.

“Yes, I did know about Jasper going to Santa Monica instead of England. I kept it a secret because he said that he had some important business down there. He said it was to protect you but I swear I didn't know anything about his brain cancer,” he says as he looks up apologetically.

“You know that if I had known, I would've told you. Please just trust me on that Autumn,” a tear falls from his chin and I believed him. Marcus was not one to easily cry or let his emotions show. He always hid it behind his tough guy act. Seeing the expression on his face, I just had to hug him.

“He’s an idiot.” he says and lets out a small laugh.

“I know.” I whisper back with a laugh of my own. It felt good to laugh and I knew that this was as tough on Marcus as it was on me. That was when I decided that Marcus was definitely someone I could trust.

As I make my way back to Jasper’s room Marcus says a quick goodbye and leaves the hospital. I am alone, once again, in the soundless hospital room with Jasper. His body is motionless besides his chest rising and falling with every breath. This is my fault. A voice says in my head but I shake my head in response. Then why do I feel so guilty? Another tears slips from my eye and I wipe it away self-consciously, as if someone else was watching me.

“You could have told me,” I whispered quietly, “I would have been there for you no matter what. I mean, that’s what you've been doing for me right?” I say with a small laugh. The doctor comes in and checks everything to make sure he’s doing alright. Dr. Alvarez was possibly the youngest doctor I’ve ever seen. I wouldn't be surprised if he was in his early 20’s. He was Jasper’s main doctor for now and had been checking on him constantly.

“Autumn, I get that you’re worried about Jasper but staying overnight and all day is not healthy for you.” Dr. Alvarez said to me. I force a small smile on my face and nod silently. He looks at me with sympathy and pats me on the back.

“My son was in a coma before, I understand. I know how hard it is and how heart-breaking it is to see someone you love so limp and helpless,” he pauses a moment and looks around before speaking again, “I know that all of this is a load of bullshit and honestly it really sucks. But this is the worst part; it only gets better from this point,” He says with a grin. This time I really smile at him and I was thankful that good doctors like him existed in the world.
