Athena lay on her bed in the early hours of Saturday morning, letting the ivory sheets engulf her body, her vibrant blue eyes staring out the window at the grey clouds and fresh rain, feeling a wave of calm wash over her body. This was the only weather that ever made the girl feel like this. Happy. Relaxed. Athena struggled to sleep at night. She didn't know if there was something wrong with her. She had insomnia maybe? Or maybe the blonde witch was just scared. But she just wished there was a way for her to shut those big blue eyes and let her dreams take over. Today was the day that Athena would go to Diagon Alley to collect her supplies for the year ahead. She was so excited to get out of the house. Being stuck here with her mother all summer long was torture.Literally.
She hadn't seen her best friend Elara for nearly two whole months and it had been too long. Being apart for so long had been one of the hardest things for her to ever do. Her friends were the only things keeping her going.
The girl swung her legs over the side of her double bed and the second her bare feet touched the oak floor a shiver of coldness was sent through her whole body. Athena made her way from her room to her en-suite and turned on the hot water of the shower, steam instantly filling the small room. As she stepped into the shower she welcomed the warm droplets that spread across her skin and breathed in the smell of the scented candle she had lit. Once she had finished, she stepped out of the shower, and not being of age yet, the young witch decided to let her hair dry naturally instead of using her wand like she would at Hogwarts, letting the curls fall loosely around her shoulders.
Athena stared into the mirror at her face, wondering if she looked anything like her Father. She had big blue eyes, the colour of the Tenerife sea on a sunny day, surrounded by thick dark lashes. Just like her mother's. Freckles splattered her nose and her upper cheeks, as if someone had flicked a paint covered brush at her face, but only appeared in the summer months when the sun was at its brightest. She also had thick eyebrows, dark like her lashes and pink plump lips situated underneath her small button nose. Dirty blonde hair grew from her head and cascaded down past her shoulders and rested halfway down her back, also the same colour as her mother's. Small rivers of light blonde streaks ran through her dark blonde hair as if it had been dyed. She wished she looked even the tiniest bit like her Father, she didn't want to be associated with her pathetic excuse of a Mother any more than she needed to be.
"Mother are you ready yet?" Athena shouted cautiously up the stairs. She had done her makeup and was completely ready and she had only just heard her mother step out of the shower.
No reply.
"Mother?" She called out to her again, wondering if she had heard her or not.
"I am getting dressed. I will be down when I am ready Athena." She wasn't a kind woman, her mother. The blonde girl thought it best to leave it at that, not wanting a punishment.
When her mother finally got ready they went into the living room and stood in front of the large timeworn fireplace. Athena's mother went first. She reached her thin hand into the pot containing the floo powder and stated Diagon Alley, then throwing the powder down she disappeared in a flash of green flames.
Athena stood there for a minute or two, contemplating whether she should use the floo network to get away from this house, from her mother. She could go anywhere, be anyone and have a life she wanted to actually live in. But no. She knew if she ran away, she would never see Hogwarts again, never see Elara.
