Fiyero looked at Elphaba concerned, but without letting go of her hand
-What do you mean?
Elphaba sat back down but with her sight lost at some far away point
-Glinda really needs to know I'm alive Fiyero, she deserves to know
Fiyero say next to her and put a piece of her hair behind her ear
-Elphie...
-Don't call me like that-Elphaba said blushing
-Okay Thropp-Fiyero smiled but then turned serious-It'll be safer for her if she thinks you are...you know...
-Dead?-said elphaba with shiny but cold eyes
Fiyero nodded slightly. He knew he had to go easy with her. She was going trough a rough time.
-I can't let her think I'm gone Fiyero, she's my best friend in the whole world, think how you would feel if you were in my place
-I can't honey, I have no friends-Fiyero joked trying to make Elphaba laugh, though deep inside, they both knew it was true
-You know what I mean...
-Okay, how about this? Lets suppose you tell her, and then? What's next?
-I-I don't know...I don't know! But I can't stay away from her forever, I just can't, I need her!
-Elphie look at me-Fiyero raised her chin so that he could look at her straight in the eyes-Do you want her to be safe?
-Of course
-Do you want her to be happy?
-What kind of question is that?
-Just answer okay?
Elphaba whispered, trying to hide the tremble of her voice
-Of course...
-Then you have to let her go...
Elphaba started crying silently. Fiyero hated to see her like that. He raised her chin again and kissed her lips softly
-I'm here-Fiyero said-I'm not going anywhere, I promise
Elphaba nodded
-I know...-she said
They both laid back down, one next to the other, watching the sky, until it became dark. The sky filled with stars, which they both counted until they fell asleep, there in the middle of the grass, holding each other's hand.
A few hours later, Elphaba blinked awake and looked at her partner, who now was calmly sleeping. What would happen if...?
But no, she had promised. But, could she...? She would be back before he would wake up and he'd never notice...
It was quite tempting...
Elphaba let go of her dear scarecrow's hand and kissed his forehead
-I'm sorry but this is something I must do-she whispered in his ear although she knew he couldn't hear her.
The wicked witch got up and there, in the middle of the night, she began her way back to the Emerald City. She would be back before the sun raised and Fiyero would never notice...at least she hoped so...
And what if he discovered her? He should understand her feelings...
She would fix things up with him later, she didn't know how, but she would.
The only thing she was completely sure about, at that moment, was that Glinda had to know...
