I trip over a rotting log that had fallen in the last storm, skimming my knee and dirtying the skirt of my dress. I hear footsteps crunching the newly fallen leaves close behind me, I scramble to get up and hide behind the nearest tree.
"Sister! You can't hide forever!" Damon's voice echoes through the empty woods. Says the person who lost the last three rounds.
"Come out come out wherever you are!" Stefan's higher pitched voice chanted what he had heard his siblings say. I hold my breath, attempting to mask my heavy breathing. Right as my eldest brother is upon me, my father's voice booms throughout the trees.
"Scarlett! You better not be in those woods again, we have company and if you have a single scuff on your new dress, may god be with you!"
I silently curse myself for being so unthoughtful. Before Damon can spot me I jump out into his path. He stumbles back and smiles, "looks like you're in for a scolding sister, shouldn't be running about in the woods, 'not very lady like'" he jokes, mocking my father's voice. I giggle and playfully shove him.
"It's your fault! You are the one that suggested we play a game of hide and seek!"
Before I can say anymore, my father calls my name again. Damon scoffs, but let's me slide past him as I run to my waiting father. When I make it to the front, I pay no attention to the boy sitting on our front porch with an older man, both dressed sharply. I pull the dirtiest spots of my skirt behind me, attempting the hide the stains. My own game of hide and seek.
"Yes father?" I politely answer, making my face look as innocent as possible.
"We have company," he answers through gritted teeth.
Realizing my impoliteness, I turn to the young boy and to whom I assume is his father.
"How do you do?" I say extending my hand. My father looked even more displeased by my choice to shake the man's hand. It was—as he would say— 'unladylike.'
I realize my mistake and slowly pull my hand back to my side, covering the dirt stains more effectively. Despite my attempts my father still sees the splotches of uncleanliness that covered my dress. Anger burned in his eyes, but I pretended not to notice. My father grips my shoulder with more strength than necessary, and propels me forward,
"This is Robert Chaining and this is his son," he said motioning toward the young boy who was eyeing me with borderline disgust, "William."*****
My eyes snap open as soon as his name is spoken, causing my already thundering heart to beat faster. I pull myself into sitting position, pushing the long brown locks out of my face and step off the twin size bed. I gaze around my cheap hotel room. I would've have gotten a better room, but I had been driving for hours from the last town and just wanted rest. Peeking out the thin curtains that covered the grimy windows, I see that it was midday. I sigh and touch my stomach absentmindedly. Under my mossy colored tank top was a small lump, barely even noticeable if not pointed out. The lump was caused by a belly piercing I received a few years after I was turned. Well it was originally a ring that was spelled by a talented witch so that I could walk in the sunlight, but after an encounter with some particularly nasty vampires, it fell off and I almost burned to death in the sun's unforgiving rays. After that I thought it might be safer to keep it somewhere where I wasnt so vulnerable. So I took the stone and turned it into a belly piercing. The tiny travel brochure on the table read my thoughts.
"Welcome to Maryland!" It said. I rolled my eyes, humans, always so energetic. I was almost jealous. Humans always had someone there, someone to befriend or even fight with. My life was condemned to solitude, without my brothers, or even my father who I could always count on to tell me what I was doing wrong. Even that was a closer bond than i've had with anybody in a long time. I couldn't even seem to get along with others of my kind, or any kind really. Vampires with their endless bloodlust, witches hating my kind and werewolves—well that's obvious—
Alone.
It seemed like the world itself had a lonely tint, making it a perfect synonym to describe my situation. Alone. I shake my head in attempt to shake away the thoughts and feelings of my life, deciding instead to get ready for the long journey to Mystic Falls.
