Lucy POV
This story goes waaaay back, about a year after Harley and I first met. I spent weeks in Arkham waiting for Harley to come back for me after she left with Joker. I was eight years old then and I was just starting to get into my evil ways. But this is the start of the story where Harley and Joker teach me how to be just like them."Oh come on, J, give her a chance! She has no memory of life before us, we have to teach her from the top, be patent!" Harley says, laughing at me to him. I stare gormlessly at the wall where the bullet hit, completely missing the target. For the millionth time already. Joker looked at me like he wanted me to shoot him instead of the target.
"Try once more, my honey," He growls. I aim the gun, straight in the middle of the target. It was perfect.
"See, ya do this everytime. I don't get it. How can ya have such a good aim n' still miss?"
I focus on my aim, making sure I will do it this time.
"Good girl. Keep it steady... and... FIRE!"
I missed again. My face dropped in disappointment.
"WHY YOU YOU'RE DOING THIS ON PURPOSE TO ME AREN'T YA YOU LIL-"
He siezes my shoulders and prepares to lift me clean off the ground.
"Wait- puddin?" Harley says quickly. "I think I see the problem," She saved me again.
"What." He snaps back.
"Come here, Sweetie," She says. She kneels right behind me.
"Aim again," She tells me. I do it again. Perfectly. She covers my ears tightly. I aim, then I fire. It finally hits right in the middle!
"Hey I did it!" I smile, turning around to face Harley.
"You did!" She squeels, pulling me in for a hug. "That's my girl!" Smiled Joker as he picks me up. He gives me a hug too. This was only the beginning. I gradually got better and better at shooting, then they would start teaching me harder stuff, like picking locks or how to bomb somewhere without blowing yourself up. Around a year later, they knew I was ready. Joker said he had a little test ready for me. He said after I could join them late at night, something I always wanted to do back then. See, I couldn't sleep in the house without Harley being just downstairs or around the house. It would be cold, dead and silent and I would wait up all evening till they were both home safe.
"Ok, honey, here's the plan," J started, looking straight into my eyes. "Tonight, we're gonna start simple. A house. A random house belonging to anyone. All ya gotta do is go downstairs and open the front door for us," I sighed with relief. thinking it was dead easy and all I had to do was literally open the door.
It wasn't till much later that evening when he lifted me up to cling onto the drainpipe when I realized what I had to really do.
"Do mama proud," Harley whispered to me as I scrurried up. I tugged at the window until it opened. Terrified, I carefully slipped inside. I landed in their bathroom, falling straight down and bashing my head on the sink. It wasn't too loud but it made me paranoid even so. I was shaking uncontrollably as I clumsily got to my feet. I won't lie, I was terrified, creeping quietly around a strange, dark house that I had never seen. There were people around too, I could hear someone snoring next door. I kept looking round anxiously in the dark as I quietly tried to find the stairs. It was so hard for me not to cry, the back of my thumb was sore from me biting down on it so hard. It took me no time at all though, finding the stairs almost straight away. I came downstairs as slowly as I could, especially since Harley taught me that stairs creek and even the slightest one could wake someone. It must have taken me ages to reach the bottom, I was terrified of waking them up and being caught. My head was getting increasingly dizzy as time went on. I dismissed it as just nerves and ignored it. But when I finally made the front door, I could barely make out a thing that I was seeing. I helplessly felt the door in the dark, trying with all my might to find the lock. Then, I heard a creak. I look down. The letter box was hanging open...Harley POV:
Alrighty, I know she was just a kid when this all happened, but a girls gotta start somewhere, right? She did try hard though. She was gone for ages though, Joker timed it for 37 minutes and 45.6 seconds. She must have had trouble. We haven't really spoke about it since it happened. She did good, she just wasn't up to Mr J's standards. After Joker lifted her on the pipe, I wrapped my arms round his.
"You think she's gonna do good, pumpkin?" I ask him. He immediately pulls his arm free.
"She's gonna get us caught. I told ya she's not ready,"
"She is. You'll see," I say angered. Lucy worked so hard for this, I was not letting ANYONE put her down, not even my puddin. I continuously bounced my hip, I wanted so desperately to go in after her. What if they had a bat, caught her then smashed her skull in? I wouldn't be able to live with myself. Some time passed. Quite a bit, around 20 minutes. I hate waiting so of course I was as fidgety as ever.
"What's the matter with ya?" He hissed, looking over at me.
"Nothing sir," I reply, jolting my legs in and out. I was fixated on that door, praying my little girl makes it out in one piece. Even more time passed and J was clearly having enough.
"I'm gonna make it easier," He said. He went round to the front door and stuck his hand through the letter box.Lucy POV:
"I'm right here Mr J," I whisper, so quietly I could barely hear myself. The sides of my vision were really going. It felt like my brain was being blown back towards my skull. I slowly stuck my hand in too, to show I was there. His finger pointed upwards, where I found the chain. I successfully pulled it to the right after just three attempts. Joker opened the door and I just stood there, dazed.
"Ya did it!" He said to me. "C'mon, don't just stand there, we gotta hurry! Honey?" He said, yanking me out the house by my arm, then looking at me as I almost fell to the floor, my knees giving out.
"Ya ok?" He said softly. I couldn't respond, all I could focus on was my vision and the fact that it was like the sea... all... wavy. In the very long distance, I could hear sirens.
"We got plenty o time... god knows how we were caught, come on, let's go home before they see us. He threw me over his shoulder and I could see Harley running along after us. We sped off in the van and went straight home. He carried me indoors and placed me gently on the couch. Harley came back with a blanket.
"What's happened honey?" She asks, wrapping it round me.
"I don't remember," I whisper, almost crying.
"Ya see anyone?" J asks. I shake my head.
"Anyone see you?" I shake again.
"How were we caught then?" He says scratching his head.
"Puddin! We're supposed to be figuring out what happened! Is anything sore honey?" She asks me.
I shake my head, confused about where I was, then remember I hit it on the sink and that it still hurts. I nod my head and pointed to the back.
"Aw, sweetie. Did ya hit it on somethin?"
I nod again.
"I thinks she's concussed," She whispers to Joker. He tells her he's going out to take care of the cops and that he will be back soon. Harley started to stroke my hair, making me close my eyes. She lifted me up and sat down, letting me lay across the sofa with my head on her lap.
"Shh," She kept saying, cradling me like a baby.
"My poor little girl, my poor poor baby," She murmured, still stroking my hair.Harley's POV
I was SO mad at myself. How could I have possibly thought she was ready? She was only 8 at the time. Obviously I can see now that it was a big learning curve, she's almost as good as me now she's grown, but what if she hit her head harder? She could have knocked herself out. Then she would have got caught and we all would have went down. But I rocked her until she went to sleep in my arms, and I hardly came out of that spot at all until she healed. Obviously we can't go to the hospital because we would 100% get recognized, so waiting it out and self medicating is all we can do. It did take a while. Once she went to sleep she couldn't talk for a whole week. At one point we thought it was something more serious, like brain damage. And of course Mr J being as sick as he is wanted to throw her into the river and leave her there to die. The thought of that made me shiver. But she got better. And so we have so many good times and adventures ahead.
