"Late again, Mr. Ro'Meave?"
Zane dropped his bag by his desk and plopped down, adjusting the bandana he had around his face. All he gave the teacher in response was a grunt.
"I guess it's detention, then, hm? Isn't this your third one?"
As the raven haired greaser pulled out his notebook he sighed and mumbled a "Yep. That's right, Teach." This was his third time being late just this week.
Zane usually was on time for class to appease his parents, but he'd been trying to boost his bad-boy rep.He was trying, okay!
He wasn't exactly greaser material. He didn't even care about being popular. He just wanted to look and act tough so people would leave him alone. Well, all except maybe one person—Aphmau. Aphmau was his best friend and pretty much the only person that knew or liked him, other than his brothers, of course.
Zane zoned out as the teacher talked away and doodled in his notebook throughout the lesson. When the bell for lunch rang, he was the first one out of the classroom. He just needed to get out of that stuffy room.
Snapping out of his school-induced daze, he felt a strong tug on his arm.
"Hey, hey, Aph! Watch the leather!" Zane was tugged out of the crowd by the sleeve of his jacket and into a nearly empty hallway by none other than Aphmau. She put her hands on her hips, where her white button-up blouse stopped and her lavender skirt began.
"I was just hoping you didn't forget your promise to meet my friend today."
Zane rolled his ice-blue eyes. "I remembered, doll." Zane referred to his friend as "doll" quite often.
"And that you weren't about to skip out on us." Aphmau pouted.
"Ugh, I don't like people." Zane's posture slumped and he leaned up against a wall.
"I know, I know, but I think you'll like her! She's a real sweetie. Pleeeease???" The short girl bounced up and down in excitement, her dark brown curls going up and down with her.
"Cool it, doll. I'll keep my promise. Not saying I'll be happy about it though."
"Yay! Oh, here she comes!"
Aph's head turned to look down the busier hallway at a peppy little meif'wa girl with bright pink hair weaving through the crowd, and calling out "Aphmau! Aphmauuuu!". She bounded up towards the duo and giggled, leaning in towards Aph for a bear hug.
"Kawaii~Chan! This is Zane. He's the other friend who I wanted to introduce you to today."
The meif'wa suddenly got shy and her tone turned very hushed. "Hi, Zane..."
Woah mama...
Now that she was up closer to him, his heart started beating really fast. She was really really cute. There were some cute girls at his school, but Kawaii~Chan? Cuter than any of them. Zane was bright red under his bandana. Thank Irene for that thing on his face.
He cleared his throat. "Hi."
Was that really as much as I could muster?
Kawaii~Chan fidgeted with her pink floral skirt. Irene help Zane.
Without a word, Aph grabbed her two friends and dragged them out to the lunch room before they ran out of time to eat. Surprisingly, having to eat with Aphmau's pretty friend made him want to skip out on lunch even more. Having to sit and make small talk was bad enough, but having to make it with a girl he couldn't even talk to? This was going to be the longest lunch period ever, he thought as he and the cat girl sat at his and Aph's usual lunch table."So Zane, you're a junior too, right?" Kawaii~Chan asked quietly.
And there's the small talk. Jeez...
"Yep. We're in the same class." The greaser looked away from the pink haired meif'wa. This was uncomfortable. When was Aphmau going to be back?
"Oh, I thought you might be a senior. You look like one." Zane chuckled a little under his breath.
"Yeah, I get that sometimes." It was the truth. He stood at five feet and eleven inches, and was the second tallest of the Ro'Meave brothers, so he was often mistaken to be older than he was.
Aside from age, what could he talk about? There had to be something that they had in common to chat over.
"You in any clubs?"
That was stupid.
"Yeah actually. I'm in the baking club."
Well shit. She just keeps getting cuter.
"Uh... well, I'm not good at baking, but I like to eat." Zane added an awkward chuckle to the end of that sentence. To his surprise, Kawaii~Chan actually giggled. Aphmau slid her tray next to Zane and plopped down, immediately jumping into conversation with the meif'wa. Thank Irene.
Zane stayed silent most of the lunch period, but while Kawaii~Chan spoke with Aphmau, Zane listened intently. She liked the way she talked and got excited about things so easily. Aphmau and her boyfriend, Aaron, going out Friday night? She got excited. She thought they were the cutest couple. Planning a slumber party this weekend? She just can't wait. She was positively happy about everything. Zane found it different, but in a good way. Kinda kookie.
On the way back to class, Aphmau asked Zane many questions.
"So, whadda ya think of her?"
Zane simply replied with a "she's nice."
"Okay but how nice? Like sweet? Cute?" She inquired, and then mumbled, "maybe dateable?"
"What is this, an interrogation, or are you writing a book?" Zane questioned with a hint of irritation in his voice. No way was he telling her he thought Kawaii~Chan was attractive. Having a girl would not do anything good for his tough guy image. Nuh uh!
They were nearing Zane's classroom doorway. "No, I don't like her."
The little brunette girl wasn't buying it, though. She could easily see the red blush peeking out from underneath the greaser's bandana. "If you say so, casanova."
