Nevaeh walked off the school bus and walked down the dirt road that lead the her home. It was a cloudy day with a slight breeze every once in a while. The trees, that lined the road to her home, moved a little as the breeze went through their branches. It was a sound Nevaeh had heard many times before; always enjoying the sound of the leaves wrestling in the wind. As Nevaeh approached her house, the wind picked up a bit. Nevaeh didn't think much of it; knowing of the approaching storm. In her small town, there was always a storm and they usually weren't that bad either. As Nevaeh put her key in the door and walked in the house, she had a sinking feeling in her chest, something she had never felt before.

It was that feeling that something was wrong or something bad was going to happen. Nevaeh pushed aside her feelings and grabbed herself a snack as she did every day when she got home. This day, her golden retriever, Misty, followed her around which was somewhat usually for her. Misty let out small whimpers to Nevaeh as she ate her snack. "What is it, girl?" Nevaeh asked.

Misty just laid her head down next to Nevaeh. Once again that feeling came back to Nevaeh. As she sat in her thoughts, the rain started to fall outside. I pounded against the roof of the house; it ran down the windows as the wind picked up. Nevaeh stood and walked to the window. The clouds were a dark grey, but now, more of a black color. They were swirling around in the sky like how Nevaeh would draw swirls on her papers. The branches were swaying more than they were before.

To Nevaeh, something was off; something she couldn't ignore anymore. She grabbed her phone to look at the recent weather report. Flashes of lightning and the booming of thunder made her heart race even faster, adding on the her fear. She was home alone; something about this storm was different, too different. She looked at the weather report which stated there was a tornado warning out for her area. Nevaeh slipped on her sandals and a sweatshirt before grabbing Misty's leash. Keeping Misty near her, she slowly started to calm. She sat quietly listening to the thunder, the rain hitting the house, and the wind blowing.

The wind was much stronger now; once again, causing that feeling to return. Nevaeh sat until she couldn't hold the feeling that something was wrong anymore. She left the living room and headed for the stairs that lead to the basement. Misty followed close behind as the wind began howling louder behind her and Nevaeh. Something was coming. To Nevaeh, it sounded like a freight train but she knew it wasn't. She sat under the stairs, hugging Misty tightly from her fear. She always feared tornadoes but she never knew why.

Nevaeh listened as the roaring grow louder and louder until it was right over her. The tornado was right above her now. She closed her eyes tight and hugged Misty. When she opened her eyes, it was all over. The danger of the tornado had passed for now. Nevaeh waited a little while longer until she was sure she was safe for now. She attached the leash to Misty's collar and crawled out from under the stairs. Nevaeh, quickly, realized she was trapped under the rubble of her home.

She called out to see if anyone was there to hear her cries for help. Finally, after some time of calling out, she heard a familiar voice call her name. "Dad," she called from under the rubble.

"I'm here, sweetheart. We're going to get you out," her dad called from outside the rubble.

Nevaeh's dad and the others worked to remove the rubble to free her. Finally, after what felt like forever, Nevaeh and her dog were free from the rubble. "I was so scared, dad," Nevaeh told her dad, hugging him tight.

"It's alright, Nevaeh, everything will be okay, now," he said in a reassuring voice.
