Taryn doesn't go to school the day after the test results came in. She helps her mom come back home from staying at the hospital for three stressful days. The apartment is quiet for the most part. Taryn doesn't argue with Megan when her older sister tells her to go do chores around the house. Zach constantly looks like he's on the verge of tears whenever he even glances at their mom, but he tries to mask his emotions so he doesn't escalate anyone else's.

The apartment has been neglected since it hasn't been the top priority the past few days, so Taryn is busy cleaning and returning the space to look like it usually does.

Megan is in charge of food. Their mom would normally take care of meals, but is unable to due to her tired state in her bedroom. Zach closes himself in his bedroom. Taryn isn't sure what he's doing, but she assumes he's listening to his music blasting through his earbuds.

There's no petty sibling arguing. No wrestling. No off-key singing from a content mom swaying as she stirred a pot in the kitchen.

The atmosphere was just off.

It was like as soon as the word cancer was uttered from the doctor's mouth, everything was thrown off balance. Maria Merrick was supposed to be bulletproof.

The three siblings never thought they'd see the day where the hope in her eyes would falter and she would admit to feeling anything but great.

Taryn can't get her head to wrap around the fact that the person whom she looks up to the most is withering away in the room next to her. It feels unreal.

It still feels that way as Taryn walks into school the next day beside Zach. The two don't say anything before they part ways, blending right into the crowd of students filling the halls.

Taryn keeps her head down and her eyes trained on the floor in front of her sneakers so she doesn't run into anyone. She keeps replaying the sight of her sick mother in the hospital bed, who didn't even look sick a few days prior, in her mind. It cripples her mood, so she flushes it out with images of her plans for Miles's suit.

She doesn't even get to reach her first class of the day before the speakers on the ceiling crackle to life. The man at the front desk of the office's voice echoes down the halls as he says, "Zach and Taryn Merrick to the office."

Knowing that she and her brother are about to get grilled about skipping yesterday without having a parent call in, she groans and turns on her heel, heading down the long hallway towards the front office.

Miles didn't see Taryn at school yesterday. Normally he wouldn't be concerned since Taryn is known to cut class every now and again, but Miles just felt like there was something wrong when he saw her empty desk yesterday.
