Chapter 2: Mom
It’s been a month since we got the news about dad. Mom tried to contact few friends to look for him. But failed. It seems like we can't do anything, no, actually we don't know what to do. Dad left with his own will, we assumed.
The reason? Who knows? Did he hate us that much? Or, is there something else? Was he pretended to love us all this while? Oh God! I don't know, really don't know.
Mom found out that dad already emptied all the money in the bank. She trusted him so much and now we end up with no money. The news about dad already spread around our small town.
Everyone seems to know everything and the worst part is, they accused us as the reason dad's disappearance.
Some even spread rumors that dad runaway with his secret love. Who knows what else they were talking about?
Mom seems to lose her patience with all the rumors going around. She somehow managed to find another job to support both of us. She may have looked normal on the outside but i knew she had been crying almost every night.
They have been together since high school. That's when she got pregnant and was disowned by her family. She was forced to drop high school because of her pregnancy.
Since then, they have been through a lot together, and dad chose this moment to flee. I really can't imagine her feelings right now.
Too many things going through my minds. Might explode soon or later. So, i took mom's advice to look for some part time jobs until the school starts.
Lucky I found one. I was helping my friend, Sarah's family grocery store at the moment.
Sarah was my best friend since childhood. We basically grew up together. I have few friends, my classmates precisely, and James, my boyfriend.
He was spending his school holiday at his uncle's house, which was located at some rural areas, I assumed. It’s very hard to get phone reception normally.
We had talked few times after the incidence about my dad. For now, I'm just waiting for his return. I really need someone to comfort me. Part of me still wishing for my dad's return. Without him, I felt pain and emptiness.
He had been my everything. I loved him and respected him the most. And I knew, deep in my heart, he was not a coward to leave his family behind. He must have left for a reason. A reason yet to be discovered.
Its been four months since dad left. On one Sunday morning, mom did something unexpected that tore my every belief on dad's return.
I was rearranging my closets at that moment when I heard noises. At first, I ignored the sound but later on, I heard boxes being dragged down the staircases. I was curious, so I walked down the staircases. Nothing. And no one.
"MOM!" I shouted. No answer. And then, I smelt something burning and saw smoke coming from behind. I ran to the kitchen and found mom was burning something outside the house.
"Mom, what are you burning?" She never replied. And at that moment, I saw cloths and papers and pictures being burned. Oh my God! Dad's belongings. This can't be happening. She can't do like this.
I still believed dad would return one day. I ran back to the kitchen to get water. Mom seemed to read my action and followed me from behind. She stopped me from taking the water.
"Mom, what are you doing?"
"I'm doing the correct thing."
"What? How can you say that? You can't destroy dad's belonging."
"Why shouldn't I? HE IS NOT RETURNING, Ariel. No point waiting for him anymore." She shouted with teary eyes.
"That's it; you are going to give up? I thought you loved him, mom."
"WAKE UP Ariel! Your dad is not coming back."
"Mom, please don't do this. I still trust dad..."
"I trusted him more, Ariel. But, there is no point waiting for him. We need to move forward. And this is the only way..." mom pleaded.
"By burning all his stuff? Why?"
"HIs belongings bring back memories Ariel. Its painful. After all this year, after all that we'd gone through..I can't breathe....... That's why...This is the only way I can think of...” she sobbed.
"The only way? Then how about me, mom? I'm part of him as well. Do you plan to burn or kill me as well?"
OUCH. I felt the sting on my left cheek. Tears already rolling down without boundaries. I knew that I’d crossed the limits. The next moment, I realized she hugged me.
"I'm sorry dear. I never meant to hurt you. But, it was too much."
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that."
"You are the only one i have now and I’m not going to lose you. You are the meaning of my life, Ariel."
Mom started to act differently after that. She seems livelier. She always come back late. At first I thought she was taking up some odd jobs to support us. But then I realize something was off. I decided to ask her on Friday night.
"Mom, is everything okay? You seem different."
"Hmmph...Oh...Really? How different?"
"I'm not sure. But is there something you want to tell me?"
"You realize then. No point hiding anymore."
She has been hiding something. I knew it. She was very happy these whole weekdays. Only one think can make mom happy. DAD! Maybe she managed to contact dad? Really? Why didn’t she tell me?
She took a deep breath.
"Ariel, I....I....met someone," she confessed. I don't understand. As if she realized my confusion, she continued while holding my both hands.
"I met my old school friend. His name is Nathan. He used to be my best friend. But when I left with your dad, I lost contact with him."
Okay, what was that? He is her friend. So, what’s the deal? Why was mom so happy? He is just a friend, right? Only a friend? Really? Or.....?
