Chapter 1: Dad
What a boring day, I told myself. I walked into the living room and plopped onto one of the sofas. I started to recall what I do every day, practically, it was the same.
Errghhhh….I’m bored. I ate more, work less, absolutely no exercise and the worst part: I have gained five kilograms in two months.
Mom was off today. She should be resting but she insisted on doing all the chores. She never forced me to do anything. I love my parents. Being the only child, they spoiled me a lot.
My eyes started to drift slowly. Must be the effect from mom’s delicious lunch. Hmmm….time for a short nap, I thought.
The phone rang.
“Ariel! Answer the call!" my mom shouted from the kitchen.
What? I forced myself to open my eyes. I'm too tired to even move my own body.
"Mom! The phone is just next to you. Why can't you pick it up?" I shouted back, feeling irritated. She was washing all the dishes, I knew but errghhh....
"Fine...I'm answering." I gathered all my energy to walk to the phone in the hall. Oh no....that damn phone just stopped ringing. Errghhh....I had waited for a minute, I'm sure whoever they were, they will definitely call back.
Two....
Three...
I stared at the phone.
"Who's that?" my mom asked from the kitchen.
"No one," I answered.
"Then why are you standing there like an idiot," she asked while looking at me.
I blinked at her and then sighed.
The phone rang again......I quickly answered the phone before my mom.
"Hello.....he is not in........he...he went for a business trip....what....no...on leave?" I turned to look at my mom. I really didn't know how to explain to her. After hanging the phone, I walked to the kitchen, pulled a chair and sat on it. My mom just followed me.
"So..." she started.
"Mom, its about dad. His supervisor from office just called. It seems like he…he lied to us."
"Lied? Okay,... what did he do?" she asked slowly while looking straight into my eyes.
Both of us turned to look at the phone when it rang again. Oh no…again. She volunteered to answer. Slowly she picked the phone and looked at me.
"Hello....yes.....but.....ok I understand," she hanged up the phone and came to sit beside me.
"What now?" I asked knowing it has something to do with dad.
"Car dealer. It seems like your dad haven't paid the installment for three months. Ariel, what's going on?" she was getting worried. What should I do? How should I tell her?
"Just now, dad's supervisor called. He said dad sent in three months leave notice and he supposed to start back his job last week. But apparently, he never showed up. That's why they called," I told her slowly waiting for her reaction. My mom stared at me, digesting what I told her.
"Wait, what? I thought he went for a business trip, he did say that he is going for a business trip. It supposed to be his first business trip after working for the company for almost 16 years. He was so happy; wait...no I was so excited and happy for him. I think his supervisor is lying. It can't be right? I...."
"Mom...."
"We were so proud of him; we even didn't ask him much about the trip...."
"Mom....."
"I'm very sure your dad is on his way back. Just wait and see....."
"MOM!" I shouted. She looked at me, oh no, her eyes were red and watery.
"Mom, relax okay. Don't cry. I'm sure; it’s all a misunderstanding,"
"He said it was a business trip to Mesir. And we can't contact him there. And he promised to return back after three months...And..."
"It’s a lie, mom. He never went for a business trip. He was on leave." I was trying to comfort her; no I was trying to comfort me. Really? Why would he lie? He is a role model in my life. I loved him. He is a father every girl would ask for. But, now? Tears started to roll on my cheeks, my visions were blurry. Why? Why? Dad will never do anything to hurt us. But now? I was hurting badly. He lied. He would never do that.
We were happy and excited, like what mom said. It was his first business trip. He even said that its hard to contact us, so we just need to wait until he is back. We waited. But now? I wiped my tears. Be strong Ariel.
"Ariel, can you do something dear?"
"Yes, of course."
"Call back your dad's supervisor and ask for more details, will you?"
"Sure, mom."
"I need to go to the bank and settle our car's installment. I will be back soon." With that, she rushed out of the house carrying her handbag.
She was hiding her face. She doesn't want to look weak. I stared our kitchen table. Dad on leave. And he lied to us. Why would he do that? He even said that he already settled the car installment with the bonus he got few months ago. He lied again.
I sighed. Too much to take in one day. Seems like a dream.
