"Happy new year, sweet boy," that content smile immediately slipped onto Alwynn's face at the sound of Vant's early morning voice in his ear.

"Mmm, whatever," Alwynn muttered drowsily, feeling Vant playing with his hair, knowing the vampire's gaze was set upon him.

"You have any new year's resolutions?" Alwynn sighed happily, propping himself up on one elbow and rubbing his eyes.

"Haven't really had chance to think about it," Alwynn straddled Vant's hips, leaning down to capture the man's mouth with his own, fatigue stopping them from going much further, "suppose I want to be happy," Alwynn murmured, brushing his thumb over Vant's cheek, "I want to tell my parents about us, I want to move away and... I want to live," Vant cocked an eyebrow sceptically, "I want Brodie gone," Alwynn reiterated in a smaller voice.

"He's not going to hurt you, sweet boy, I won't let him," Vant sat up, snaking his arms around Alwynn's hips, "you'll be safe soon, Ali, I promise you," and at that vow, the waterworks began again for Alwynn. He looked away, staring across the room as the tears stained his cheeks, not wanting Vant to see.

"Why is he doing this to me?" Alwynn quavered, sounding rather pathetic to his own ears.

"Some people are wired differently in their brains, Ali. What we see as an overreaction, people like Brodie see as justified."

"God, what's he gonna do next? Walk up to me in the streets and shoot me?"

"That won't happen," Vant's tone was firm, although Alwynn could hear that twinge of fear laced within.

"And what if it does, Vant?" Alwynn met Vant's eye, his own terror much more perceivable than his boyfriend's, "what's to stop him doing that? You can't protect me twenty-four seven, Vant, as much as you want to, you can't. It's impossible with my parents, they won't accept us, and they won't accept how serious this situation is. They have other priorities, it's just who they are," Alwynn rested his head on Vant's shoulder, sighing deeply, "he's going to get to me. Whether it be tomorrow or next year. He's going to get to me."

"No, he won't, Ali. If I need to, I'll take you away from here until he's found. As soon as you turn eighteen-"

"Vant, there's a month and a half until then, you think he's just going to avoid attempting anything until then out of courtesy? I am going to die, Vant," Alwynn lifted his head, forcing Vant to look at him, seeing the tears sat in the vampire's dark eyes, "I am. He's going to kill me. There's only one thing you can do to prevent that," Alwynn didn't want to force the idea he had been dwelling on for days onto Vant, he didn't want to cause any argument either, but it was necessary.

"What is it?" Vant asked in a feeble voice, cupping Alwynn's cheek, grazing the pad of his thumb over the boy's bottom lip.

"Turn me," Alwynn whispered sheepishly, tipping his head to the side ever so slightly, "turn me, Vant, please. It's the only way. That way I wouldn't be so fragile, you wouldn't have to protect me, we could walk away from here and-"

"You would be my son," Vant interrupted in a mournful tone, skimming his thumb down over the curvature of Alwynn's throat.

"Rather that than dead."

"Some would disagree," Alwynn watched as Vant rose from the bed, dressing in only a pair of black sweatpants, "not all of my children are content here, Ali, you know that. Maybe it's time you speak with Heiress, see her point of view on the situation."

"Are you sure that's safe? After what happened last time, I'm not so sure I'm too comfortable around her," Vant leant down, pressing a tender kiss to Alwynn's forehead.
