Story: Incessant
Incessant. At three in the morning that was truly the only term that could describe the wail of Halli's three-month-old son. She sighed, and despite the insuperable weight of sleep-deprivation crushing down upon her, she swung her legs out of bed and picked him up.
As soon as Badan was in her arms, the crying ceased and his face lit up. The bright smile that erupted on his face at the sight of his mother was more than consolation for the late nights. She smiled back down at him as strong arms wrapped around them both, that hug carrying along with it the empathetic joy that struggled to escape from Chris's heart. He kissed his fiancée on the cheek, and yawned.
He could remember well the results of her proclamation that she was pregnant. She had made it through her entire senior year as "that" girl. The terse comments. The harsh opinions. The brutal judgments. If it affected her, she'd shown no sign. Like trekking across a vast tract of land, she had pushed on towards the end she could see just at the edge of her sight. She had graduated. For that, he would always be proud of her.
And now, looking at her holding her son, love emanating from her in great waves, he knew that Badan had been their salvation. He had brought them together in a way only an unplanned pregnancy could have. Anyone could see from the way he held her, or the way she looked at him that they loved one another. But no one saw this softened, bleary-eyed, sleep-deprived smile. No one knew how it felt to hold her in his arms every night. No one knew how it felt to rock his child to sleep, while she fell asleep in the chair right next to them. No one saw the love in this small group of three.
At three in the morning, there was truly only one word that could describe the compassion in that bedroom. Incessant.
