Chapter 3

Our travelers, after having rested for a few days in one of the delightful hotels of the Isola degli Esperimenti, after having walked in the shade of those palm-wreathed forests of roses; after getting intoxicated with all the perfumes of that inexhaustible and divine flora, they waited for an Italian steamer, which was to take them to the Island of Dinamo and then to the Indies.

The Italian steamer took them in a few hours from the port of Equality to Dinamo.

This island was once the ancient Andaman, inhabited first by a pygmy and wild race, which disappeared like so many others under the murderous contact of the European races and became an English colony, and then, founded the planetary United States, one of the four great accumulators of cosmic energies, called Dinami; one of which was placed in Malta, the other in Fernando di Noronha, a third in one of the Kurili Islands and a fourth in ancient Andaman.

Paul wanted Mary to see one of these great laboratories, where planetary energies were collected and then distributed by means of wires in all regions of the globe.

The Indian Dinamo, where our travelers landed, had become a city and a school. City inhabited by engineers, who ran the gigantic workshop and school where schoolchildren, who wanted to have the diploma of dynamologists , or doctors in the science of physical forces, flocked from all over the world .

Landing at Dinamo, no strident noise, no disgusting smoke, announcing a workshop, as was the case in the old factories. And in the streets no man dirty with coal or lard, or with his face worn out by unhealthy or excessive work. The workers were cleanly dressed, vigorous in appearance, and almost by no means were distinguished from their leaders, the dynamologic engineers.

Always green trees gathered in small woods and beds of fragrant flowers separated the different compartments of the giant workshop.

Our two travelers asked, if the general manager of the island could be seen, and they were immediately introduced to his living room, where he was studying.

They had a letter of introduction for him and he, as soon as he saw it, made them sit down, asking them to wait a moment, because he would have commissioned an engineer to accompany them to the different laboratories of Dinamo.

A few moments later a very amiable young man presented himself and placed himself at their disposal.

- Yes, I believe, that their lords are not specialists, and that they want to make a quick run in our workshops to get a general idea of ​​the way in which we produce the forces and distribute them in the most distant countries of the world. Since our planet has three other great centers equal to ours, we have divided the earth into four departments, and we correspond with all of Asia and with Micronesia.

From the building where the Director lived, they left in a large garden. The building was in the center and from it for many divergent roads, like the spokes of a wheel, we went to the different laboratories.

- If they believe, - said the engineer, - we will go first of all to the Historical Museum, where we will see the rapid evolution of mechanics through the centuries demonstrated in as many models.

Maria, who did not know the existence of the great planetary distributors of force other than by name, was all eyes and ears and passed from curiosity to curiosity; of admiration in admiration.
