Chapter 3.

Will’s eyes automatically scanned the camp perimeter as he exited the main building. His glance slowed as they paused on the apparently dozing Rob propped up against a tree trunk. Seeing him just made him frown. The meeting that he had been part of had been long but for the most part successful. However sitting under the tree was one part of a two part problem that could blow all their plans sky high… literally.

Unlike the others Will knew these two men were not civilians. He’d been part of the Federation military himself once upon a time and could identify in these two a certain alertness, a bearing to their stance that screamed military training. Pity he couldn’t get Tucker to believe him enough to get them out of their camp. Unfortunately Tucker was right, because of the damn rain they’d been here too long to be just let go, if they were spies then they’d uncovered too much information by now to be set free. And unlike Mary he didn’t feel right in just killing the two men, although he knew he would if it came to that. But like the doctor he would try to assess and pry as much information as he could. So far neither of the men had revealed anything incriminating.

Walking over to Rob he spoke to the man, “Get up.”

“Wow, what’s the magic word.” Rob spoke without opening his eyes.

“Now.” He’d known he was awake.

“Geez someone really has to work on his manners.” Rob stretched slowly from his seated position until he was standing.

He’s like a f*cking cat, Will thought watching him obliquely.

“Well lead on my sweet jailor where are we going now that I’m standing?”

“Follow that path.” Will pointed to a path leading into dense undergrowth.

“Into the woods are we?” Rob asked nonchalantly before sauntering along the path. For all his outward bravado he felt a pang of unease. For the past two weeks neither he nor Kamal had been allowed away from the camp and now he was being told to walk into the woods. Huh maybe his captors had come to a resolution. He only hoped Kamal was prepared.

Will stalked silently behind Rob watching the other man’s alertness come to the fore. He smiled a little bitterly; he knew the other man was no civilian.

“Stop here.”

Rob came to an immediate halt at the brusque command. When there came no further orders he turned around.

Will was no longer there.

“Will?” Rob questioned unsure. Was this some kind of test? If so how did he react ducking for cover now would only give himself away but on the other hand…

Whoosh.

Rob had no time to think as a knife glided out of the undergrowth.

Bare moments before the knife sliced across his face Rob pulled back and crouched behind a dense fern clump before immediately moving to a sturdier tree trunk.

Screw giving himself away. Will obviously had other plans.

He calmed his breathing as he began to feel the spike of adrenalin. And he’d been bored these past two weeks. This could be fun. Rob was almost smiling unconsciously.

Another knife glided through the fern clump he’d been in moments before. This time from a different position… maybe not so fun. His enemy was on the move.
