Sami's POV

.

Sitting at the back of the class has always been my thing.

I mean, what could be worse than siting at the front? The back is always going to be safe territory, no matter what. No one can hurt you, hit the back of your head with random objects, and, most of all, isn't it just really creepy when you feel someone staring at the back of your neck?

But it's especially great when you're an awkward seventeen year old girl like me.

Hi. I'm Sami Perkins.

And I'm never any good at introductions.

I'm the most awkward person you will ever meet, period.

Sure, my life is just like any other girl's. I go to school, I eat, I sleep, I breathe.

So, yeah.

But I'm just really awkward.

Now I know I'm using that word a lot, but there's literally no other way to describe me.

I have a loving father and an annoying little brother, a decent sized house and an okay life. I have my best friend, Dawn, I'm single, and I do well in school.

I'm the quiet loser at the back.

At least that's what some people say.

I've never had a boyfriend, never been kissed and I have never really had any friends apart from Dawn.

That's my life for you.

And, oh, I've never met anyone as awkward as me. Seriously.

Right now, I'm sitting in History, fourth period. And, yep, you guessed it, I sit at the back.

Makes sense right?

The bell rings as I watch four blonde girls all with tank tops and pink lipstick stride into the classroom taking their seats, then two jocks, three valedictorians and five "nerds".

History's a small class.

I take out my blue notebook and pencil, shoving my bag back under the desk.

It's only a second later, that when I look up, I see a blonde haired boy with blue eyes and a black lip ring walking into the room, looking straight at me. I pull my sleeves down over my hands and look down, blushing furiously.

I've never really known how to act around boys. They don't seem to notice me anyway.

I've never seen this boy before.

Then I also notice that he's wearing a sweatshirt like me, his sleeves also pulled down over his fists.

The boy finally sits down next to me and sighs, getting a red notebook out and a blue pen.

"Hi."

I frown and bite my lip, meeting his eyes. He has a black lip ring that he takes in between his teeth. He also has an Australian accent, I notice.

"H-hi." I mutter, looking back down at my note book.

"I'm-"

"Good morning class." My history teacher, Mr Wicks walks in with a cup of coffee and a stack of papers, slamming them down on the desk.

"As you can see, we have a new student. I would really like it if we all made him feel welcome. Now, Luke, would you like to come up to the front and introduce yourself to the class?"

I tuck a stray curl of hair behind my ear.

"Sure." Luke walks up to the front and raises his eyebrows, sighing.

"I'm Luke Hemmings. I'm from Australia, I have three best friends named Calum, Ashton and Michael. They came here with me. So, yeah. Well , we all moved to Michigan together. I'm eighteen years old, and never had a girlfriend." Then he looks straight at me, smiling and blushes.

I sink lower in my chair, looking down, avoiding all the stares from my classmates.

Luke clears his throat and takes his lip ring between his teeth again. "That's all. And I've never really aced socialising."

And with that last comment, he walks back down the aisle and flops down next to me, tapping his pen against the desk.

"Interesting introduction, Luke. All right class, could you please get out your textbooks and skip to page sixteen, please?"

I hear a few murmurs and the name Luke a couple of times, then take out my book, not looking back at him.

"What's your name?" Luke asks, eyes glued to his textbook.

"Um, S-sami." Come on Sami, be confident...

"Sami Perkins." I look back up at him, sighing.

"Nice to meet you. I'm not good at socialising, as you can tell." He smiles, looking down at me.

"Me either." I turn to page sixteen in my textbook and fix my sweatshirt.

"Well it's nice to finally meet someone as awkward as me."

I smile and read a couple of lines off my textbook.

Awkward.

Finally.
