Chapter 6

[Clementine's POV]

Violet and I headed to a local park to hang out for a little bit. For some reason she doesn't let people hang out at her house. I respected her privacy.

We just sat on the swings for a short while before Vi spoke.

"So you moved from Georgia right? Long way."

"Uh, yeah. I actually moved a few years back but we were constantly moving around the state. Eventually Lee got a good job at the school so we finally settled in this area."

"And Lee is your adoptive father right? What does he teach?"

"Biology. He's Mr Everett to all the students. Does he teach you by any chance?"

"Nope but Louis does. He told me about some cool new science teacher he had that always did these fun experiments. I'm jealous to be honest."

"Aha. Louis is gonna be even more jealous to know he's my parent. Well...adoptive parent."

"Heh, yeah. Hey, by the way, what happened to your real parents?"

I knew at some point I'd end up telling some of my friends about what happened. I thought I mentally prepared myself enough but now it's actually happening. I looked up to see Vi curiously awaiting for my response.

"I-i um...it's...um...s-sorry. I don't...i-just...it's complicated"

God! I sounded pathetic. She's gonna think I'm such a loser.

"Shit, sorry I didn't realise it was such a sensitive topic. I didn't mean to get all up in your private business. Can you forgive me?"

Is she kidding? Of course I will!

"Yes! It's fine don't worry. I was just shocked and the question was so out of the blue. Don't apolo-"

I was interrupted by Violet hugging my tightly. I guess she was really worried about upsetting me. I held her back to let her know it was okay.

"Hey, don't worry about it. It's cool Violet."

"Sorry, I'm sorry. I just- sorry - fuck. I didn't mean to hurt you Clem."

I pulled away a held her cheeks in my hands.

"Violet, relax. Stop apologising okay? It's alright"

I smiled at her and she returned it. She always wore a glare into school but when she smiled...god I loved it.

We ended up staring at each other for a lot longer than intended. The sound of my phone ringing made us snap back to reality. I swear we were closer to each other than before. I took the mood killer out of my pocket and saw that it was Lee calling.

"Lee?"

"Clem? Where are you? It's getting late and dinner's nearly ready. AJ is wondering where you are too."

"Yeah, yeah. I'm sorry I'm with some friends and I guess I got side tracked and forgot to call you"

"Okay. Are you coming home now or are you hanging out with them for longer?"

"No I can come home now. I'll just say goodbye and get on the bus."

"Alright. See you soon"

"Yeah, see ya."

I look up to face Vi.

"Guess you have to go home then. I'll walk with you to the bus stop"

We headed to the bus stop and made small talk while we waited. Vi had to get on a different bus so when mine eventually arrived we hugged and she said she'd text me later. I said goodbye and got on the bus.

An old lady was sat on the opposite side to me and asked me "Who are you thinking of that is making you smile like that?"

I hadn't realised until now that I was smiling like an idiot. I was thinking about Violet texting me later. Strange.

The lady spoke again.

"Is it that girl you were with?"

"Um...yeah I guess it was."

"Hm...you remind me of myself. I doubted it for a long time too."

What did she mean?

"What? I'm confused."

"Not for long. Just so you know...you two would make a lovely couple."

Couple?? What?

"I um...sure."

Why did I agree with her?? What the hell?

She smiled at me and as the bus came to a stop I realised this was my destination so I got off. As the vehicle drove off I couldn't help but stare as it went away.

I shook my head and walked the shorter distance to my house and ket myself in.

"Hey Lee."

I hadn't noticed how exhausted I felt.

"Hey sweetpea. You seem tired, do you still want dinner? I can heat it up for you"

"Yeah sure. Let me just go and get changed" I said as I went upstairs.
I threw my bag on the floor and got changed into a tank top the definatly needed a wash and a pair of boxers. Yeah, boxers. Girls underwear is just so uncomfortable.

I slid down the banister downstairs and saw my dinner on the table beside Lee who took a quick glance at me before looking back down at his laptop. He was probably doing some work or something.

"So, what did you get up to?" He asked, not taking his eyes away from the screen.

I really didn't want to admit that I had been tagging. Lee had been an cop a for years before he adopted me and AJ. He quit after he lost his best friend. He died about 2 years before...nevermind. The story with Lee, AJ and I is complicated.

"We just hung out around in town. Louis had to go home so he could finish his homework but me and my friend Violet went to a park."

"Louis...Is he that funny one with the dreads?"

"Heh, yeah he is. He has you for Biology right?"

"Yeah. He's hilarious. Always joking around but still gets the work done. Good kid. And who is Violet?"

"She's...a good friend. She was pretty cold at first but it turns out she's actually really nice. You'd be surprised that Louis and her are so close. Total Opposites."

"Oh. Are they dating?"

"What? No, they're just friends. Trust me, Violet wouldn't date him if he was the last person on earth."

"Aha, I see."

I looked down at my plate to find it empty. I guess I'd eaten it way quicker than I meant to. I got up from my seat, put my dish in the sink and said goodnight to Lee before making my way to my bed.

I laid down and was ready to fall asleep but for some reason I just couldn't. Why was I still awake?

Just then I heard my phone light up so I took it off charge to find a new message from Violet. I couldn't help but smile.

Vi: Hey, you still up?
