Prologue
How could she love him in return when she did not know him? He told her how he felt when he arrived at the inn. She thought it the most beautiful place and now it was ruined with the thought of his sad face because she rejected him in the kindest way possible. She did not want to hurt his feelings. He truly was a gentlemen and yet a stranger to her. She was mad at him for this but now it was all over. He was permanently in her life weather she liked it or not. He wouldn’t let her go again, after searching for years, no. This couldn’t be fate she thought or was it?
Battle Scene
This first circumstance was terrible, it was a battle scene and she was not lady like or proper. She was aiding injured men and was filthy with blood and dirt. Yet he found an attraction to her so deep once he saw her crystal blue eyes and long lashes; he fancied her. She helped him up from the ground as his face was terribly injured. He had a wound above his eye and he could not see from that left eye. There she was as she asked if he was able to walk and he whispered a dry “yes”. She helped him up and he prayed to God, so thankful and happy that he had his legs to walk. She took him to the tent where the nurses were and many wounded and now dead soldiers were. She sat him on an empty cot and told him to lie down. She then told him that she would clean his wound and his face and then he spoke before she could do anything. “Water” he asked for and certainly she gave it to him. He felt better now and she then continued to clean his face. He closed his eyes as she gently wiped the blood and dirt from his face and washed his wound to which he made a painful noise and she apologized for it. She then wrapped his head and told him that he was better than before. With his right eye he could see her getting the now dirty rags she used to clean him. She looked at him and saw the color of his eye, hazel. She then asked if he had any other discomfort, he nodded no. She told him if he needed anything to give a shout out and raise his arm to call attention. He felt so grateful and so full in his heart knowing that he would be ok.
“Wait!” He called out to her before she could leave him to help another wounded man.
“Yes, sir, what is it?”
“Your name, what is your name?”
“Oh, I’m Viola Harris and the head nurse is Mary Sicilia.”
“I’m Lieutenant Randolph Ellis, thank you Miss Harris.” She nodded her head and excused herself.
Two other nurses and a doctor had taken care of Randolph but there was one nurse he found more to his liking. Viola would see to him from time to time. Then it was less and less as more injured men were brought in and those who were improving were moving out to stay at convalescent homes. This was the last place he saw her. After his company and many others were sent from the battle fields, he was determined to find her and live his life with her alongside him. As soon as he was well enough from the injuries to his face and the fatigue he set search for Viola Harris.
It has been two years and the battles had been over. He decided to no longer go back into battle or war now that he had spent much of his time dedicated to the military. He was 30 years of age and he now had new goals in his life that he wanted to achieve, one being to settle down and have a family. He still wore his uniform proudly, but slowly came to wear his regular clothing. He was a wealthy man coming from a long line of men in his family who have dedicated their lives to being in the armed forces. Many women he knew were attracted to him and his pocket but he ignored them. He only wanted to see those beautiful blue eyes, hear her angelic voice, and feel the gentle touch of Viola Harris. He searched everywhere from taverns to inns and went mad for awhile. He called himself crazy for even falling in love in such a terrible place. How could one fall in love after being in battle? He even thought, perhaps she is married now with children , perhaps she is no longer in England, and the worse thought that came to his mind, perhaps she is dead. No, she couldn’t be he thought to himself as he sat in the second inn he came too in the next town. It almost broke his heart if he gave up hope. He was determined and he would not stop until he found her or at least some information of her.
