Sirius couldn't do it. Mercy and Dumbledore were right. Sirius didn't mind keeping a secret or dying for his friends, but he couldn't do it. He would break too easily because of his past, so he decided to pick someone who had nothing to lose.
He picked Peter to be Secret-Keeper instead of him. He trusted Peter because he was always the outsider, the weaker one, the one who had nothing to lose because the Dark Lord would never think of Peter as Secret-Keeper.
The only person Sirius told was Mercy. She was elated with his decision. She didn't want him to put his life in danger by being Secret-Keeper.
"I'm really glad you decided not to be Secret-Keeper," Mercy whispered, pecking Sirius's neck.
He gently smiled, kissing her neck in return. "I know you are, Mercy, I know. I just... This is going to sound cheesy, but I just couldn't be it because of you. I can't have Voldemort using you to get to me to get to James and Lily. And I can't imagine anything happening to you. I have... I have too much to lose, but all that I have is you."
She stared at him, tilting her side to the side. She wasn't sure how to respond. All her life, she wanted love. All of her time at Hogwarts was spent fantasizing about Sirius, and now, she finally had him, but she was still scared because of the way she was born.
"Hey," he whispered, snapping her out of her daze. "I know what you're thinking. You're thinking about how you were born under Amortentia."
He was right, so she didn't deny it. Sirius sighed. He was always good at guessing what was on her mind.
"Being born under Amortentia shouldn't matter," he said. "It doesn't matter," he clarified. "I love you."
She pouted for a moment before nodding and burying her face into the crook of his neck. "I love you," she mumbled.
