Daryl

I couldn’t believe it, there she stood, right there in front of me was Anna and in her arms was a newborn baby, I’d say no older than a day. I sat my crossbow down and put my flashlight away as I made two quick strides over towards her, placing my hands on her cheeks and pulling my lips to hers in a kiss I never thought I’d ever get to have again. Her free hand went up around my neck as her fingers played with my slightly longer hair since she’d last seen me. When I finally released her lips, I kept my hands on her cheeks, my forehead against hers, and she kept her hand on the back of my neck. “I never thought I’d see you again,” she whispered as tears began to fall down her cheeks.

“Shhh, shhh I’m here,” I said as I brushed my thumbs over her cheeks and wiped away the tears. I glanced down at the baby in her arms and smiled, knowing it was mine. “This is your daughter,” she whispered smiling down at the baby the same time I did, “this is Diamond.” “Diamond,” I asked, “really?” “You don’t like that name,” she asked looking up at me and standing back a little, hurt clear in her eyes. “No, no baby that’s not what I meant,” I said quickly and grabbing her cheeks with my hands again, “it’s a perfect name for her. Diamond Dixon, I like it.” “You wanna hold her,” she asked looking up at me then down at the baby as I nodded.

She carefully handed her over to me, making sure I had ahold of her just right before she stepped back and looked on at the sight before her. I smiled down at my baby as I felt a tear leave my eye when she looked up at me with blue eyes, my blue eyes. I looked up at Anna and smiled as I reached my free hand out and placed it on her cheek, guiding her face back towards mine for another sweet kiss. “Everything okay,” I heard Maggie say as I pulled away from Anna, keeping my back towards the door as I held my baby but glanced up to see Anna look around me to see her cousin. “Maggie,” Anna said running around me and tackling her startled cousin.

“Oh my God,” Maggie said finding her voice, “Anna I can’t believe it’s you! Wait you’re skinny, baby? Where’s the baby?” I took that as my queue to finally turn around and face the two girls. I looked up at Maggie with a smile on my face as she eyed the blue eyed baby in my arms. “Oh my God,” she said as her hands went up to her mouth and she looked about ready to cry. “Maggie meet Diamond,” Anna said smiling as she came to stand by me. “Diamond,” she asked, “it’s a girl?” I nodded my head when she looked up at me then back down to the baby in my arms. “Can I hold her,” she asked holding her hands out to me. I didn’t want to hand over the baby yet, after just getting her, but I knew it get plenty of chances to hold her again later.

After Maggie had the baby secure in her arms, I immediately turned around and wrapped my arms tightly around Anna, laying my chin to rest on top of her head. I closed my eyes and smiled when I felt her wrap her arms tightly around my midsection as she turned her head to watch Maggie with our daughter in her arms. “The others are they safe,” I heard Anna whisper after a couple minutes. “Yeah they are,” I said and released her from the embrace, “but we need to be getting back. Maggie I hate to ask this but could you wait here?” “We can all fit Daryl,” Anna said to me as I looked back at her, “Maggie and I are small enough. We can all three fit, even with the baby in my arms.” “Okay,” I said nodding as I helped her get the baby back into her little homemade pouch while Maggie finished gathering supplies for Lori’s baby.
