“I told you Thursday, how many times Charles?” my mom screeched on the phone. Of course she’s on the phone. I was sitting at our marble counter quietly, eating my Lucky charms when I heard the door open. Without looking at the door, I immediately knew it was Louis. I ran to give him a hug as he set our Starbucks on the counter. “Hey,” he whispered, knowing all too well my mom was going to be on the phone. Like every morning. We walked into the kitchen when my dad ran down the stairs, pouring himself a cup of coffee and grabbing his keys before running out the door. “Good morning to you to,” I muttered. Louis rubbed my back in sad comfort. I heard the garage door open knowing my mom has left also. I sighed. “How was your morning?” I asked. He laughed. “Fantastic. I got a lecture of how I should start going to school. Stupid dad didn’t even know it was summer,” he said. I gave him a sorrow smile and went to get Max up.

“Go away Skylar,” he yelled. I fumed. “Come on Max, it’s the first day of school, 2nd grade!” I sarcastically said. “That’s the point.”

“Louis is here,” I tried. His eyes shot open and ran downstairs. That could always get his attention. I started to pick up his room a little because lord knows whenever he would do it. As I was cleaning, I came across a worn out little note book. It was ragged and looked like it had been through Hell and back a few times. I was about to open it, curious of what lies inside, when Max came up and saw me. “What are you doing with that?” he yelled franticly. Snatching it from my hands, he glared down at me. I was so confused. “Well I just came across it,” I fought back. “Max, what is in there?” I wondered.

“None of your business,” he muttered. Instead of pressuring him, I decided to go tell Louis. Once I told him, he went to go ask Max himself. My phone was ringing. “Hello? I asked. “Skylar, what is going on, how could you not tell me!” my best friend Maddie yelled. I sighed. “What are you talking about Mad.”

“Oh you know exactly what I’m talking about,” she yelled.

“No I don’t,”

“Check the newspaper,”

She was so annoying sometimes. I went outside and picked up the daily newspaper. On the front cover there was my dad hitting me. What the?

“Mad this is fake, I swear this never happened,” I said.

“Louis!” I yelled. He ran down quickly, and I shoved the paper at him. His eyebrows furrowed in total confusion.

“Who would do that?” I yelled angrily.

“I don’t know Sky, but we will talk when you get to school.” Then she hung up.

“This is probably angry companies trying to ruin your dad’s career,” Louis said. I bit my lip and shook my head. “Max don’t be late for the bus!” I called out before hopping into Louis car since mine was in the shop. “Perhaps.” I agreed. Once we arrived at school, I noticed every face was looking at me with guilty eyes. I rolled my eyes. Yay, everyone has read the newspaper this morning. I glared and everyone before meeting Louis at the back of the car, where no one could see us. He put his hands on my shoulders and looked me right in the eye. “Your going to go in there, not listen to a word anyone says about you, and you’re going to fight if they throw a punch okay?” he said. I laughed knowing no one would hit me. “Okay,” I replied. “Did we just quote Tfios?” he smiled. I buried my head into his chest laughing. Before I left, I gave him a hug and breathed a deep breath.

The thing is, since my dad became business manager of a lot of things, he put a lot of people out of business. Including most of the people at my school. So that leaves me to loser girl. As I walked down the halls everyone stared at me, burning holes into me. I guess I was immune to it now. High school isn’t what it’s all cut out to be. They say it’s the best times of your life, but really its hell. I sighed, putting my books I got over the summer, into my locker. When I shut it, I was face to face with Lauren Johnson. Oh fuck. You know how in the typical story there is always that one popular girl that’s against the main character? Here we go.

I put on my best smile and cheerfully said, “Lauren!” and engulfed her in a hug. She took it by surprise and pushed me off. I gave her a sad face and sauntered over to the next hall. She caught up with me and spun me around. “I’m surprised you showed your face around here again, didn’t think you had the guts,” she spat. She had a preppy smile plastered in her face. I pursed my lips before saying, “Well I’m surprised you actually have the guts to come up to me when your one of the only people here my dad hasn’t fired yet,” I spat back. I didn’t realize it but the whole school had stopped and looked at us. Everyone cupped their mouths and yelled “ohhhhhhhhh!” I smiled sweetly as she clenched her teeth before stomping back to her class, her high heels clicking.

Here’s the other thing about this school. Half of them understand it’s not my fault. Basically I have half of the school on my side as she has the other half.

As I walked to class, Louis caught up to me and gave me a stern look. “Oh what now Louis,” my accent thickening the air. “Lauren Johnson in the hall today?” he angrily said. “Wow word travels fast,” I shrugged. “Don’t play that game Sky!” he yelled. I glared at him. “I thought you said to fight back!” I said back. “Well I take it back! Sky it could seriously get you in serious trouble,” he whispered. I giggled. “Louis I’ll be fine.” He hugged me goodbye and left me to my first class.
