Thou Hast Not Forsaken Me

7 3 2

I marvel to imagine
how my Savior must have felt
when His circle of friends grew empty.
I wonder to remember
the words that He spake:
"My Father, for thee, hast sent me."

How can I even start
to understand what He meant
when He suffered for all mankind?
I can never comprehend
the pure love He showed
when He took all my pains I confide.

And then on that dreadful Friday,
they took my Savior and King,
and they crucified the Almighty,
so that death will lose its sting.

He was forsaken
by the ones He called His friends.
He stood alone
until the very end.
He was forsaken
so He could set me free,
and though I feel lost and forgotten,
Thou hast not forsaken me.

I try to imagine
how it must have been like
to walk with Him by the sea.
I think of His words
and the lessons He taught
in the city of Galilee.

I want to understand
how the disciples had felt
walking with Him along that road,
when they saw Him again,
though they knew He had died,
and knew He lived as the prophets foretold.

I wonder if they remembered
how lonely they felt that day,
when their Teacher and Friend was taken
so that we could stand and say,

He was forsaken
by the ones He called His friends.
He stood alone
until the very end.
He was forsaken
so He could set me free,
and though I feel lost and forgotten,
Thou hast not forsaken me.

Lead me, oh, my Savior!
Leave me not alone!
Stay by my side forever
as I walk the great unknown!

I am not forsaken!
He is my heavenly Friend!
I do not stand alone,
even in the end!
He was forsaken so I don't have to be.
I remember, when I am broken,
Thou hast not forsaken me!

Christ will never forsake;
He loves me.
