Home time, alone time

Desperatley, I searched around the large room for somebody who I knew. I mentally listed my options.

A drunk and dizzy Kyle or Nat…

Nat!

I hadn’t seen him all night but he was a year older than me so he probably had a car.

Hopefully…

Suddenly I caught a glimpse of his shaggy brown hair. ‘Please let it be Nat. Please, please, please!’ The figure turned around revealing matching light brown eyes. ‘Thank you god. I owe you!’ I made a mental note to repay him.

“Nat!’ I screamed over the thumping music. “Have you got a car?” I asked stupidly. I just wanted to get home. There was nothing worse than being a loner at a party.

Especially if you didn’t know anybody.

Confusion spread across his eyes before he answered.

“Yeh. Why?” He asked. Thank god he wasn’t totally drunk either.

“I’ll explain later. Can you take me home? Please. I don’t know anybody else here and Kyle is completley hopeless at the moment” I begged him.

“But I thought you came with Katy?” He queeried; then, noticing the hurt in my eyes, he added, “that bitch…”

He grabbed my hand and led me through the crowd of people before we made it to the door.  I braced myself for the icy temperature that awaited me outside. The door burst open and I started shivering yet again. Seeing my shaking body, Nat ran to the car with me in tow, and shoved me inside the warm vehicle. I breathed out in relief, not knowing that I had been holding it in, and looked around his car. It was an old fashioned mini with soft leather seats and smelt of peppermint and spice. Hummm, interesting combination but strangely, it worked and I definitley liked it. Nat stepped in, taking care to not bump his head on the low ceiling.

“I should have known,” he started, resting his head in his hands. “Since a couple of years ago, Katy has changed. She changed from a sweet, bubbling girl into, well, this!” he said, holding his hands out in front of him, presumably meaning to show me what she ‘had turned into’.

He started the engine and switched the heater on. Which, for a fact, I was one hundred percent grateful for. With in a couple of minutes, we were parked outside of my house. He had obviously taken a different (much quicker) route home.

Taking care to retreive the correct key for my front door before I stepped out of the warm car, I unlocked it and stepped inside. My parents were at my Dad’s new boss’s house and therefore, Sam was sleeping over with Marisa.

I gestured for Nat to come in. He politley declined but I persisted until he gave in. I beckoned for him to take a seat on the sofa while I asked if he wanted anything. Knowing that he would refuse, I ignored his answer and went to make hot chocolate in the kitchen.

My opinion was that even sixteen was too young to drink coffee and, in that case, chocolate was my drug.

And hot chocolate being the drinkable version of that.

I placed the mugs on the table and joined him on the sofa. We wrapped our frozen hands around the warm exterior of the ceramic container and sipped slowly, carefully avoiding each others eyes. Finally, he broke the silence.

“So, I guess you have a boyfriend back home?” he asked.

“What do you mean? I am home!” Then I realised what he meant. “Oh, in Asia. Yeh, I do” Again, that pang of depression and grief hit me like a bullet being shot through my skin, through my ribs and reaching its destination; my heart. I fought back tears when I heard my iPhone ping with the sound of an email arriving in my inbox. And right on cue, it was from Reece.

Hey baby! I miss you so much but theres something I need to tell you… Hmmm, what could that be? I wondered. This isn’t going to work out. You’re in England and I’m here in Asia. I’m not sure either of us can keep up with a long distance relationship. I’m so sorry baby… This was it –

We have to break up…

And, just like that, it was over. I lifted my head up to meet Nats’ eyes. My heart hurt but now I knew why; I couldn’t bear breaking up with him. I hadn’t ever planned it! But I was sure that, if I was ever going to leave him, I would have broken the news to him in person but he - the insensitive, arrogant, hot jerk who caused my heartbreak – was breaking up with me over an email? Pssst, I didn’t need him anymore.

So I opened my mouth to re-answer Nats question..

“Well, not anymore”
