It had been a month since the evacuation. Due to your injuries, you were immediately sent to the nearest Federation space station in order to be treated by their medical personnel. Your arm was heavily damaged. It couldn't be salvaged; it had to be removed. In place of your damaged arm, you received an augment. With your new cybernetic arm, you were kept in the space station's care until they could clear you for duty.

While on the station, you did your best to keep up with the news. Michael Burnham, Starfleet's first mutineer, was sent to a court-martial. She was stripped of her rank and sentenced to life in prison.

Good, you thought.

It was her fault. Her fault that the Shenzhou was lost. Her fault that your arm was gone. Her fault that you lost so many friends during that horrid, needless battle

Good. She can rot in prison for all you cared.

Laying in bed, you stared out the window of the wall beside you. You let out a sigh. The stars were beautiful out there, in the void of space. You missed it. You missed it so bad. The Shenzhou, exploring the galaxy, all of your crewmates, Saru...

Saru!

That's when you remembered it. During the battle, when you were incapacitated... Saru saved you. It was all blurry in your mind's eye, but you could vaguely remember it. The lieutenant carried you to safety, he held you in his arms as he evacuated everyone on the ship. Your chest felt warm as you sat there, going through your memories of him.

Where was he now?

You were pretty sure Saru wasn't on the space station. You would have seen him around during your daily walks. He must have been reassigned to another ship already. It didn't surprise you, seeing as he was a good officer. Wherever Saru was, you hoped he was okay and doing well.

However, you couldn't help but worry. The Federation was at war with the Klingon Empire after all, and if he was on another vessel... He must have been fighting in the war. The warmth in your chest turned into an uncomfortable tightness. Your legs began to feel restless at the thought of your Saru out there, on a new vessel, having to fight Burnham's war. It hurt you.

Suddenly a gentle beep could be heard from your room's door and it slid open with that familiar ssshk. You turned your head to see who had now entered your room. A woman with a warm smile looked at you. She wore a blue Starfleet uniform, but her badge was different; she wore the badge of a vice admiral. In her hand, she carried a small grey suitcase.

"Hello, lieutenant," she said. You sat up on your bed.

"Oh, um, hello... I wasn't expecting any visitors," you replied with a chuckle. The woman approached your bed, her lips still curled in a smile.

"My apologies for dropping in so suddenly, but I have some news for you. I'm admiral Katrina Cornwell." She held out her hand and you gently grasped it in a friendly handshake.

"No no admiral, I'm happy to have a visitor, especially an admiral of all people," you replied. You were vaguely ecstatic having the admiral in your room- it made you feel important having someone so significant see just you. "So, what's the news then, admiral?"

"You've been cleared for duty, and you've been requested to serve on the USS Discovery."

Your jaw almost dropped.

"Cleared for duty? Really?" The admiral laughed softly at your excitement.

"Yes. I know you've been here for a while and I've read your record; you're a passionate scientist. I'm sure you're dying to be out in the field." Katrina gently placed the suitcase on your bed. "This is for you, lieutenant."

Feeling like a little kid on Christmas morning, you picked up the suitcase and sat on the edge of your bed. You clicked it open and looked down at its contents. A brand new uniform, folded neatly, with a shiny new badge sitting on it in the centre. You couldn't help but beam with a smile as you looked back up at the admiral.

"We can leave for the Discovery as soon as you're ready, lieutenant," Katrina said. You nodded, and a question popped into your head: who requested your service?

"Oh, um, first, I have a question admiral," you piped up. She looked at you and cocked her head to the side slightly.

"Yes?"

"Who requested me to be there?" You asked as you stood up from your bed, holding the uniform in your hands.

"Captain Gabriel Lorca. He's a very competent captain, I'm sure you'll work well under him." Katrina smiled at you and walked over to the door. You had never heard of this captain, but you nodded your head.

"I'll do my best, admiral," you smiled. "I'd like to leave as soon as possible."

Katrina smiled. "Meet me at docking bay 2 in an hour then." She then left, the door sliding closed behind her.

You were absolutely star-struck. Filled with pure joy, you threw on the uniform and put on the badge. It felt so good to be in a uniform again, as strange as that may sound. You looked at yourself in the mirror and smiled. It was fresh and very comfortable as always. Grabbing your own suitcase, you packed the few belongings you had and waltzed out the door.

You soon arrived at the docking bay and the admiral was there waiting for you. Katrina smiled at you. "You look good, lieutenant," she said, smirking.

"Thank you, admiral; I do my best," you replied with a laugh. Katrina gestured for you to follow beside her towards the shuttle that was about to bring you to your new ship. Your new home.

"You'll be seeing a lot of familiar faces on the Discovery, lieutenant," the admiral said. You nodded.

"Then at least I'll be comfortable," you said. You then remembered Saru and thought for a moment; will you see him on that ship?

Both you and the admiral then boarded the shuttle and the doors closed behind you. Your new life out among the stars was now about to begin.
