I drank the last sip of beer from the bottle and put it next to me on the kitchen table, before running my hands down my face. It was way too late at night to feel so awake. When I heard footsteps behind me I didn't bother to turn around, Ari usually stayed up later than me. Sometimes all night. I never cared, but tonight I was glad he was up.
"Good morning" I spoke to him, my head was on the counter and my arms were in front of me.
"Morning" He replied. It wasn't morning. It was 2am.
"Can you get me another?" I asked lifting my head and passing him the empty bottle.
"Sure" He took it from my hands and threw it away before opening the refrigerator and passing me another bottle and an opener.
"Thank you" I replied, and opened the bottle. He stood in front of me and leaned onto the counter.
"Why are you up? You don't stay up this late like ever" He wasn't wrong, I had gotten used to going to bed somewhat early.
"I dunno, I just wanted to stay up I guess. I can't really control it" I took another sip before placing the bottle next to me. His eyes were still glued onto me. He had that 'I just woke up' look and it made something inside me melt.
"Fair enough" He stood up and ran his hands through his messy hair before taking the hair tie that was on his wrist and putting it up into a bun.
"I like that" I grabbed the bottle and took a long sip. The carbonation almost burned the inside of my mouth as I let the liquid stay there before swallowing it.
"You what?" I knew he didn't hear me and I knew I wasn't gonna repeat myself.
"I what?" Oblivious. I smiled after I spoke and held the neck of the bottle in my hand. He walked back over to me and leaned over the table and into my face.
"Tell meeeee" He begged in a sleepy voice.
"I said I like the bun" I replied leaning into him. Our foreheads touched and I watched him shut his eyes before I broke away and took another sip of beer.
"How many have you had?" He asked, I lost track around my 4th one. I didn't know where I was now. I exhaled and took a final sip from the bottle before handing it to him.
"I don't know" He took the bottle from my hand and threw it away, returning to his place in front of where I sat. "I'm bored" I changed the subject.
"What should we do?" He replied and moved his hand up so he could hold his head up with his arm.
"What do you wanna do?" I answered him with another question. It took him awhile to answer.
"Can I take you somewhere special? You have to promise to not get freaked out though" He looked up at me and spoke. Immediately I was intrigued.
"Sure. Surprise me" I smiled and got up out of the chair and walked into my room, putting on my shoes and a hoodie, before walking back out into the kitchen.
"You ready?" He asked, I nodded as he opened the front door into the night. It wasn't cold but it wasn't warm, it was fall and the temperature was weird. Some nights would be freezing and others would be warm. I opened the car door and sat down before shutting it behind me.
"So where are you planning on taking me?" I asked as we drove. The light from the streetlights was the only thing that illuminated the car.
"Somewhere" He replied and kept his eyes on the road. I zoned out on the trees that passed us before I felt his hand move onto my thigh. He squeezed onto it and it made me tense up, I turned my head to look at him and he looked back at the road smiling. I grabbed his hand and held onto it. He moved it to his lips and kissed it, bringing it back down to his lap. I broke my hand away from his and I grabbed onto his thigh.
