Ellie and I sat in silence the whole ride home. My mother used a GPS tracking system to find out where Ellie and I were since she found my room empty and sent one of her cars to where we were located.
When Ellie was dropped off at her house, she gave me a quick hug and whispered "If anything goes wrong I'm just a phone call away." into my ear before she shut the door to the black SUV that I was in.
It was then just me alone with my thoughts as the driver remained silent throughout the ride awaiting what news I would be told when I get home.
*
I entered the penthouse, switching on the lights as the silence of the long corridors only speeded up the pace of my heart. It was weird how I felt so lonely, yet when I am met with darkness and emptiness I have never felt so scared when I should have been used to it by now.
In the distance, I could hear the faint sound of yelling and arguing so I followed the noise to the back garden.
"You think this is MY FAULT, Timothy!"
"Maybe if you weren't too busy playing kiss up to London socialites you would actually be there for your daughter and we wouldn't be in this situation. Ever think of that?"
There, by the poolside on a deck chair was my mother, a glass of red wine on one hand and her phone on the other. I watched behind at a distance, too scared to intervene; I haven't seen my parents interact in years when it wasn't a formal occasion. The phone was like a barrier to the raging war between my parents. Tonight they let it all out in the open and unfortunately, I was in no man's land – otherwise known as behind the barbeque stand where I could hear both my mother and father arguing.
"I have been raising that girl for the last sixteen years of her life all on my own. The least you could've done was send her a visit on any sixteen of her birthdays so don't try to pin blame on me."
"...You need to fix up as a dad. Poor girl sees you on the newspaper more than she sees you in real life."
"...So that's you're plan? Do you think one summer is enough to fix a lifetime of damage you've made to your relationship with her?"
"Fine" She uttered definitively as if there was no more room left for discussion and at that point, the barbeque stand that I was leaning on decided to crash to the floor.
"Hi, mum." I waved awkwardly as she turned her head to face me, her fiery green eyes soon softened as she squinted closer to see my face.
"Hey, Ava. Can't sleep?" She asked me softly using the old nickname she had for me.
I nod my head as she beckons me to come closer to her. She then pulled me into her lap, my head lying down on her chest as she cradles me like I'm small again. Her sweet smell of vanilla, the faint lemony scent of detergent and warm embrace was enough to relax my restless heart and finally remind me what home felt like.
"Mum... Was that dad you were speaking to?" I asked tentatively as she heaved a large sigh out of exhaustion. I looked at my mother, her brown pin-straight hair was no longer pinned up into a bun and was flowing freely across her shoulders and her face was make-up free, the wrinkles, lines and bags under eyes were enough for anyone to see how tired my mum really was. She was a workaholic, work was what she loved yet it exhausted her endlessly.
"Your father knows. We paid the school to keep them quiet. Your father wants you to go live with him at least for a while."
Now is the time to tell her.
Follow Ellie's advice.
Tell her the truth.
She'll understand.
She'll believe you.
"Mum I... I didn't do it."
"I want to believe you didn't do it, Avery, I really do. But lately, it seems I could hardly recognise the girl you have become, you are so withdrawn I... I think if you spend some time with your father in England it would be good for you ... just for the summer."
