We had taken his car, a really nice new red Lincoln, and the five minute ride had been entirely too quiet, exactly the way I preferred it to be. I didn't have the slightest idea what to say to him, and I really needed that drink. I doubted I'd be able to receive one, not being of legal age, but I could get lucky, right?
So here I was, sitting across a booth with him in a dim Hispanic restaurant. Loud music was playing from the enormous speakers on the dance floor across the room, drowning out everyone's conversations in the packed place.
I felt out of place inside the somewhat expensive restaurant, all decked out in my Waffle House get up, but at least it wasn't a uniform.
After I had taken my seat, as furthest away from him as possible, and about to slide off of the slick seat, I groaned when I noticed he had closed the distance between us, only inches away from me.
"If you sit that far away, I won't be able hear you." He explained himself, but I couldn't help but think, good, the less talking the better, so scoot back over there.
But of course, I didn't say that.
"Hmm." I mumbled, probably a bit too low for him to have heard me over the music blaring from across the room while I studied at the menu under the Drinks selection.
I knew exactly what I wanted as I stared longingly at the menu.
"I will buy you dinner too, if you'd like. I noticed you didn't eat back at your job. It's not a good idea to drink on an empty stomach."
I looked up to him and shook my head, "No thanks. I'm not too hungry." I told him honestly, swallowing down the dry sandpaper in my throat.
"I already feel like I'm going to throw up." I mumbled under my breath.
"What was that?" He asked, making me shake my head while I kept my eyes glued to the menu.
"Nothing." I said a bit louder as a waiter approached our table.
"Is everyone ready to order?" He asked, and before Daniel had a chance to speak up, I was already talking as soon as the young highschool student had finished his sentence.
"Yes sir, I need a fish bowl strawberry daiquiri, and a shot of tequila."
I wasn't one to drink, but I really needed that shot, and from the photo on the menu, the daiquiri looked extremely good.
"And what about you, honey?" Our waiter asked Daniel, placing a hand on his hip and giving him a smile.
"Crown and Coke." Daniel told him while eying me skeptically.
"Do you have an ID, girly?" The waiter asked me, which caused Daniel to drape a heavy arm across my shoulders.
"Aw shoot." I breathed, "I left it at home." I gave him a pleading look, shrugging my shoulders. "I was born in '89, if that helps any. I just look young."
How old would that make me? Uhh, twenty...
"I'm twenty-five." I spat, hoping my math was dead on. I just really needed that drink.
He sighed, looking back and fourth between Daniel and I before folding his arms and tapping his foot.
"OK, I'm just going to let it slide this time." He told me, leaning in and sending me a wink before he scanned to see if anyone was overhearing us. "Only because he is so freaking hot. You lucky girl, you." He laughed, leaning back up.
"I'll go get you two your drinks, and I'll be right back." He grinned at Daniel before disappearing behind the bar with a swing of his hips.
I looked over at Daniel, his face too close to mine, and it was just then I noticed his side was pressed against mine.
