"Hey", Damon said cheerfully. Finally noticed me, Max thought.
She didn't even bother answering as he quietly sat beside her, interpreting her mood, but obviously not what caused it.
Max was upset. She came to class this morning, and he barely paid notice to her till Mr. Andy came in and sent the kids to sit in their seats. He was busy talking to the jocks, laughing and joking with the hot cheerleaders that were surrounding him. During that time, besides fuming and turning into a bright tomato with rage, Max knew that something had to change. She couldn't stay the same while Damon changed. But what was she supposed to do?
"Sorry, they cornered me," Damon said, taking her away from her thoughts. "Couldn't escape. And I didn't want to ram my way through the girls either," he stated comically, grinning at her.
"Damon," she whispered.
"Yeah?"
"It's ok. If you don't wanna hangout anymore. It's fine with me."
He looked shocked for a second, then he reached out wrapping his arm around her shoulder. He gently squeezed her close to him for a moment. "I like hanging out with you, you know that," he said earnestly. Max smiled in return.
Damon was a people person. There was no doubt in her mind that he'd enjoy going to parties, places she would never be invited to and somewhere Damon would definitely want to go with her. She thought she should change herself a bit for his sake, or hers. She was unsure about that right now.
The rest of the day at school was spent with Damon giving her his undivided attention while the elites kept chanting "join us" as a call to Damon, Max thought with bitter humor. She, on the other hand, was gone unnoticed throughout the day, but then again who would notice the short kid wearing a grey hoodie standing beside the tall, sexy jock. But she wasn't bothered by it, not before and definitely not now when she was planning on doing something about it.
They both walked to her house afterschool while Damon warded off a dozen invites.
