It was the beginning of my first year of uni and my parents had just dropped me off and helped me settle in then left about two hours after helping me move in. A part of me was excited because of the freedom that I now had but the rest of me felt like my parents were abandoning me. Kyle was going to arrive a week later since his orientation was starting later than mine. So I was all alone in a new city. Here's the thing about me, I'm very inviting but I never know what to talk about with strangers so I just plug in my earphones 99.9% of the time and avoid any human contact. I am super awkward (I don't think so but that's what everyone around me says so we'll take their word for it). My dorm was a sharing one so I was gonna have a roommate but she wasn't there yet. You can already imagine what was going through my mind. Bear in mind I had never shared a room with anyone at this point because back home me and my brother had separate rooms so it was stressing me out. The one thing that stressed me the most was the fact that we could be two totally different people and we might not click and that would make the whole year a terrible one. I decided to sleep since I had nothing better to do and scrolling through Instagram and Twitter or watching YouTube videos (which is what I do whenever I don't feel like doing anything else) didn't seem enjoyable since I felt so alone.
Three hours later my phone rang and it woke me up. It was Kyle. I answered.
Kyle: Hi babe. It's 1pm and you haven't spoken to me all day. Is everything okay?
Me: I'm sorry. I forgot. I was just so overwhelmed when I got here that I decided to just sleep. I'm okay baby.
Kyle: I just wanted to talk to the mother of my future kids.
Me: Awww baby. *I smiled*
Kyle: So tell me. How's your dorm room? Have you met your roommate yet? Actually, let's FaceTime so you can give me a tour of your dorm room. Maybe even a tour of the outside.
Me: Kyle, you just woke me up and now you want me to walk around. Urgh. You know I'd love to but I'm tired right now. How about I take a video once I'm well rested and then send it to you? Is that okay?
Kyle: That's a great plan because a video is gonna last longer than a FaceTime call. It's no problem babe just promise you won't forget.
Me: Have I ever forgotten anything I said I'd do for you?
Kyle: Well, there was this one time we had to meet up at Starbucks for lunch and you totally forgot to come.
Me: But babe that doesn't count because my parents took me and Levi (my brother) on a surprise roadtrip and we had to switch our phones off because we were supposed to be "bonding".
My room door opened and I sat up straight.
Kyle: It sure does count. There's absolutely no reason why it shouldn't count. Your reasoning isn't even adequate. If you had remembered, you would've asked your parents if you could call me so that you could cancel blah blah blah blah blah ...
All of a sudden Kyle's words were a murmur. The prettiest girl I had ever seen walked in. And in my head I was wondering how on Earth I got paired up with her. She was so pretty she looked like she was edited with VSCO filters. Not a single pimple on her face. Her skin was so smooth that you'd want to lick her (weird description, I know, lol). At this point I was dumbstruck. I even forgot that I was on the phone with Kyle. The girl waved as she entered the room and I waved back. She put her suitcase down and went out again.
Kyle: Babe? Baby? Hello? Hey? Amber? Is everything okay?
Me: Uhm. Hey. Sorry, I got distracted. My roommate just arrived. Can I call you later?
Kyle: Sure. We'll talk later. I love you.
Me: I love you too.
He then hung up and I put my phone on my pillow and watched the girl I was gonna live with for the rest of the year bring in her last two suitcases. She finally finished bringing her stuff into the room, closed the door, walked to my side of the room, stood next to my bed and held her hand out.
