Etienne laughed loudly as Milo flew around the room with her on his back turning most of the house into utter chaos in the process. Finally, Milo slowed down and came to halt gently setting Etienne on the couch to catch her breath from her squeals of joy.
"Milo, you're the best." Etienne declared as he brought over a cup of orange juice to her.
"I'll always regard your compliments as the highest." He stated bowing in her direction.
She sipped on the orange juice still watching Milo. He felt her gaze and let it continue, wondering what her young mind was thinking.
"You know there has been a matter of finding you a tutor."
"Who's going to tutor me at night?" She questioned.
"We'll figure something out," Milo responded. "Remember education is one of the few precious things in life taken for granted."
Etienne nodded her head.
"We'll find you a tutor to rival them all and if we can't find one good enough, I will simply have to do the job myself."
"I think you would be the best tutor anyways."
She set down her glass and crawled into Milo's lap as she so often did.
Milo wrapped his arms around her pulling her in close. He took a deep breathe inhaling all the wonderful smells of his precious child. He was happy that they hadn't been able to find her family to take her. The closest he had come to finding 'family' to take her was a woman who claimed to be her father's sister. Etienne had never seen her before in her life. She was running what looked to be an orphanage on the outskirts of the town. The decision had been easy the moment he stepped inside the building. Even the most inept human would be able to tell that horror was going on behind closed doors at this place. And frankly, once he had decided that there was nowhere else for this girl to go it was easy to settle into the new reality that he had cultivated around him by chance.
More than anything he was enjoying these simple moments that they shared. It was something that he didn't get with humans in general. Humans weren't very observant, but they could usually tell when something was off even if they didn't know exactly what it was. This was part of what kept him only as an observer to the time passing by. You couldn't be a participant if the world around you looks at you as an outsider.
