Yank. Pull. Screech. Snip.
Fitting into another identity isn't an easy job, physically and mentally. First off, you are expected to read about a person you don't know as your head jerks back with every snip the hairdresser makes!
"Ouch!" I shriek for the fiftieth time today.
"I'm very sorry G.N!" Pablo, my hairdresser shouts.
"Hold still!" Elouise, my makeup artist shouts.
"Keep reading!" Dr. Gordon shouts.
I can't process information when Pablo keeps yanking my hair and Elouise keeps yelling at me for holding still! I'll read it tonight before I go to bed. Or maybe, Dr. Gordon can read it to me right now.
"Dr. Gordon, how much longer? I can't take the pain anymore!" I complain.
"Just a few final touchups and then we're finished."
"What does this Joanne-girl look like anyway?"
"You will see."
"Why is everything a mystery?"
"Because you are going to see it at some point..."
"True."
When Pablo does the last snip of the scissor, and Elouise does some more eyeliner on my left eye, Pablo introduces me to Dr. Gordon as if he didn't know I existed.
"Presenting the new, Joanne Moskowitz..." Pablo announced.
He spun me around so I faced the mirror. Wow... I looked so... Different. I had longer brown hair with blonde highlights. Tiny freckles appeared on the outside of my nose. My eye was dabbed in pink eye shadow and some red cherry lip gloss. I didn't look like G.N Genova. No, I was far different than that. I was now officially Joanne Moskowitz. And I like it like that. I change into a light pink cardigan sweater and a long pastel-blue dress with flowers stitched in the front and back. If I went to Paris to visit Louis, he wouldn't recognize me. I don't think my parents would recognize me either. But now, I need to get into character. Transfrom from G.N Genova, the spy, to Joanne Moskowitz, a natural teenage daughter. Maybe I needed a little normal in my life. I show Fletcher and his mouth drops open.
"Dr. Gordon! Are you sure that's our little G.N?" He points at me.
"Positive. Doesn't she look beautiful?"
"Very, but it doesn't seem like her."
"That is the point! She isn't supposed to be herself! She is supposed to be Joanne!"
"Now on," I interrupt. "I must be referred to as Joanne, I will not answer to G.N or Grace-Nicolle. If I need to play the role of Dr. Moskowitz's daughter, so be it."
"Wow, she has really gotten the role down..."
"I haven't been able to read since you've all been telling me to hold still while making my head fly across the room at the same time."
"Sorry G.N-I mean Joanne."
"Now if you must, I must study for my 'role'."
"That's it! You have really been understanding the role!"
I blush although I'm not supposed to be Spy0271. I run upstairs to my room and open the file. I take a quick glance and I open my mouth wide. Jeez! This girl is so spoiled! She always wears something that is pastel colored, has over 20 bears (which I have to memorize the names of), and so many more things I can't even describe. Her attitude is peppy, funny, silly and sometimes bratty. She always wears her hair down (occasionally in a high ponytail) and is very polite. I go through my closet to see if I have anything pastel.
"Let me see.." I say as I rumage through my closet. "Black, black, black, black, ooh pretty, black, black, black, and black.
As a spy, I have to wear dark colors incase a mission takes place late at night. But for this one, pastel is my only option. I quickly grab out a suitcase, fill it with tons of spy books, my spy jacket and I take off my pastel dress and throw it into the suitcase. I change into a black shirt and pants. I meet Dr. Gordon downstairs when I'm finished.
"So when do I leave for this mission?" I ask.
"Tomorrow morning. He's going to think that you are from Hoffman's Boarding School For Young Adults."
"Can't they use the word 'tween'?"
"Ha ha ha G.N. I'm going to miss you."
"Miss me? Why? It will just take a few days."
"G.N, a mission like this can take more than a few days. Possibly weeks, months, or years!"
"What?! I'm not staying with him for that long!"
"G.N, if you want a successful mission you must. Besides, I'm sure it won't take that long."
"It's going to be hard not being myself for awhile..."
"That's the spirit! It will be fun G.N, trust me."
"I'll take your word for it Dr. Gordon."
"Okay, now lets go upstairs and pack your things."
As I go upstairs, I feel like I'm going on a vacation or I'm retiring. Spies usally never go on vacations unless it says so on their mission. As I pack pictures of Dr. Gordon, Fletcher, Louis, Aristotle, and my parents... Tears start flowing down my cheeks.
"What's the matter G.N? Aren't you excited?"
"Of course I am, I just feel a bit awkward pretending to be a child that isn't theirs..."
"Nonsence. You are a natural!"
"Thanks."
"You know what? Before you go, Fletcher will make chocolate chip cookies and watch your favorite movie, Harriet The Spy!"
"Okay, that sounds like fun."
"Good, I'll tell him right now."
As he exits, I sit down on the ground. Goodbye home. Goodbye Fletcher and Dr. Gordon. Goodbye Grace-Nicolle Spy0271 Genova. Hello new mission. Here I come.
