"Dad!!" You and your mother screamed in unison as your father crashed through the ice-covered lake and vanished beneath the surface.

Frantically, your gaze darted across the frozen water. All you could see was a jagged hole, the ice already starting to creep back in around the edges. Panic clawed at your chest, your breathing shallow and quick. The cold wasn't what made you shake; it was the fear.

"Where did he go!?" You cried, your voice cracking as you searched desperately for any sign of him.

Your mother sucked in a trembling breath, her face pale but her eyes steady. Without a word, she pulled the delicate golden locket from around her neck and pressed it into your hand. The metal was warm from her skin. She gripped your shoulders, turning you toward her.

"(Y/N), look at me." She said, her voice gentle but firm.

You nodded, your throat tight as tears blurred your vision. The memory of icy water closing over your head years ago flooded back, the suffocating cold, the darkness beneath the ice, and you fought the rising terror.

"I would never ask you to go in." She whispered. "That's why I have to. But if... if we don't come back up, I need you to run. Go get help. Do you understand?"

"No." You choked out, clinging to her jacket. "Please, don't... don't go."

She brushed a hand over your hair and kissed the top of your head. "I love you, sweetheart." She murmured. Then she gently pried your fingers loose, gave you a sad, brave smile, and dove in, breaking through the ice with a splash that sent shards skittering across the frozen surface.

"Mom!" You screamed after her, but the only answer was the cold wind and the silent, waiting ice.......

"That's how I lost both of them in one day." You whispered, wiping at the stray tears clinging stubbornly to your cheek. The memory still clung to you like frostbite, sharp, lingering, impossible to forget.

For a long moment, the only sounds were the crunch of snow beneath heavy metal pedes and the soft hiss of the winter wind threading through the bare, skeletal trees.

"That must've been tough on ya, bud." Breakdown rumbled, giving his helm a slow shake. His voice, usually cocky and teasing, carried a rare gentleness now.

You managed a weak smile, glancing up at the towering Decepticon beside you. It had been almost a year since that terrible day. A year since you'd been left alone, wandering the woods in shock and grief, and a year since Breakdown had found you, curled up beneath a fallen log, sobbing so hard you could barely breathe. You remembered how he hadn't said a word at first, just knelt down in the snow beside you, his frame casting a long shadow over your shivering form. Curious about your tiny frame.

He'd been your family ever since.

"Yeah... It's okay, though." You murmured, kicking at a patch of ice-crusted snow as you walked. "I just... never get too close to a lake anymore. So it shouldn't happen to me again." You forced a grin up at him, though it didn't quite reach your eyes.
