Lucy Stevens
Cold air nipping at my exposed skin, I walk down the almost deserted footpath. I'm feeling confident in my outfit, a plain white shirt tucked into a pair of high waisted ripped black skinnys, only a red checked flannel to preserve my body heat paired with a maroon vans. I look around ensuring I am walking in the correct direction. A large building towers at the end of the street, the words HOOD ENTERPRISES printed boldly on the front.
Realising I'm inexperienced in this field my mind starts to wander, what does a secretary even do? Will I be sitting at a desk working a phone all day? Will I have to tend to Mr. Hood's every need or will I just tell him his schedule and accompany him when he leaves the building or needs be?
I don't even want this stupid job, if it wasn't for Lisa pushing me about earning money for myself I would still be curled up in a ball underneath the mass of covers piled on my bed. Lisa would kill me if she saw my attire, she had a simple black pencil skirt layed out with a pinkish blouse and cream heels.
Upon arrival at the intimidating building I waste no time in pushing open the large doors. Stepping inside the warmth envelops me and I breathe a sigh of contentment. I take cool strides towards what seems to be the reception area asking the woman behind the desk where I would have to go for the interview. Without lifting her head she simply mutters "36th floor, use the elevator" before completely dismissing me.
Pushing myself from the desk I head for the elevator. I step inside and press the button corresponding to floor 36. Unsurprisingly I'm not alone in the elevator. Two people, a man and a woman, also entered. I feel them scrutinising my outfit choice. I turn to look at myself in the mirror. Makeup only half applied, a lack of heavy liner around my green eyes, brown hair swept over my right shoulder. Fringe falling softly down the left side of my face.
The elevator softly dings and with that both the man and woman exit, leaving me alone. I glance at the floor number, 29, only seven floors away. Upon hearing another ding I realise this is my stop. Stepping out of the elevator I hear loud chatter. When I reach the end of the hall I'm standing in a waiting room filled with women all dressed the exact same, black or grey pencil skirts with their shirt tucked in accompanied by a navy cardigan with navy heels. Glad I didn't wear the clothes Lisa put out for me now, I'd look like a clone.
I take a seat and wait for my name to be called to enter the office. After what feels like hours I hear an almost inaudible "Lucy Stevens" being muttered. Rising from my seat I follow the instructions to walk to the end of the hallway and enter the only office. On the way to Mr. Hood's office I pass by the girl who has just left the interview. She looks at me sympathetically before saying " Good luck in there. He's awful." Barely muttering a thank you I press a forced smile on my face before heavily gulping. I walk to the end of the narrow hall. Firmly knocking on the door I hear I strong voice bellow "come in", before placing my hand on the doorknob and pushing it open.
