Chapter 9 -

~ Mel's POV~

"Is she okay?"

I laughed even though I didn't find anything funny, "Well the shot's wearing off that's for sure. Sooner than normal but that's to be expected, considering we've been lowering the dosage."

The shot I was referring to was not something that was used often, it was mostly frowned upon. Considering Lilli's situation we thought giving it to her would benefit her and help things go the way we thought was best. The shot, also known as Lycanthrope Verzogerung, was meant to delay the change and suppress the abilities of the person it was given to. She had been receiving it since she was a child, which is why she never showed any signs of being one of us and her scent smelled human. It was also the reason she hadn't shifted like most kids her age. As most children grew so would their abilities, but they wouldn't reach their full potential or be able to shift until at the earliest when they turned sixteen.

I didn't even bother looking in his direction. Even though I was calm on the outside I was fuming on the inside. I abruptly turned towards him.

"Damn it Scott, how could you act that way?' I shouted at him. "I know that no matter how much time passes you will always miss Scarlet and the pain will never fully go away but you've had years to deal with it. How you acted was so unfair to Lilli. She's hurting in ways we can't even begin to imagine, mourning for people and a life that was taken from her."

He reached for me, pulling me into his arms and I didn't protest, "I'm sorry," he whispered.

"She's never gonna forgive us," I whimpered while trying to hold in my tears.

"Yes she will, we're family. When there are no more secrets and everything's out in the open, she'll understand." I sighed not even wanting to think about what was to come.

"Hopefully we can talk more tomorrow, I never liked keeping her in the dark. I just hope we don't regret the decisions we've made," I said rubbing my hands over my face, exhaustion settling in.

"Go to bed, I'm gonna be in my study for a bit," he lent down bringing his lips to mine. After all these years he could still calm me down and help me relax.

"Not too long," I asked looking into his beautiful golden eyes, which immediately made me think of Lilli. Scott and her shared the same striking eyes. He shook his head in agreement and left our bedroom.

Even though I was exhausted no matter what I tried I couldn't sleep for more than an hour without waking up. There were too many things on my mind. When I saw the sun just starting to peek through the curtains I got up, showered, got dressed, and went to start breakfast.

"Morning mom," Patrick greeted, his voice gruff from sleep. He wasn't normally the first one down in the mornings, especially not on a Saturday.

"Morning honey," I smiled over to him. "What's got you up so early?"

"Couldn't sleep."

I sighed knowing he wasn't alone, "Yeah, me too." We sat in silence, not at all uncomfortable. Me cooking and him deep in thought from what I could tell.

"It's so quiet in here," Jess said startling both Patrick and myself. She was right, it was so much more quiet than normal. Our house was normally only this quiet when everyone was asleep. "Has Lilli come down yet?"

"Not yet baby girl."

"It's gonna be a long day," Jess spoke sadly.

"Probably, but we'll make it through it. We have to," I said praying to the moon goddess that she'd help us all today.

I heard the twins pull into the driveway long before they opened the front door. It sounded like they brought all the noise that was missing from this house with them. They both stopped talking when the front door shut.

"Morning," Troy spoke up first. Patrick nodded to his brothers in response and Jessica gave a weak smile that never reached her eyes.

"It's so quiet in here," Paul stated questioningly. "Is everything okay?"

"Yes," I sighed finishing up with the scrambled eggs.

"She hasn't come down yet has she?" Paul asked taking a seat at the dining room table.

"Nope," Jessica answered popping the P.

After that it was pretty much silent and very tense. I started bringing the food over to the table so we could get ready to eat. I glanced around taking in my son's and daughter's face and I knew that they were wishing at this moment more than ever that we hadn't hidden anything from Lilli. They were her cousins and they loved her as if she were a sister. They didn't want her to feel betrayed by them.

"Why isn't dad up yet," Paul asked just as I took my seat at the table.

"He was up late, but he should be up soon," I answered. "Speak of the devil," I smiled lightly, when I heard him moving around up stairs.

"Dig in," I said while starting to fix Scott's plate. We could hear him moving towards the stairs.

"Everybodies up early today. Wait you are all aware that today is Saturday right? And it's only eight a.m." I could hear the smile in his voice. I didn't look up knowing he was trying to lighten the mood. I could feel him trying to calm himself thanks to our bond, trying to prepare himself for today. I glanced up to see them smiling up at their father, they weren't huge smiles but they were there.

We sat in silence, Scott and I both knew our kids and they weren't in the mood to make small talk. It felt like hours had gone by before we heard Lilli's bedroom door close and heard her make her way toward the stairs.

I took a deep breath in trying to calm my nerves. My family needed me to be strong, Lilli needed all of us to be strong. I glanced around the table taking my in my husband and children. I knew they were mentally preparing themselves and it only made me pray harder to the moon goddess. Some how it managed to get even quieter when she appeared at the opening of the kitchen and dining room.

She glanced around the dining room quickly before walking towards the porch doors without speaking a word.

"Lilli, please come sit with us. We need to talk." Scott spoke before I could even form words in my head. That was Scott, no matter what he always found a way to be calm and could handle almost any situation without falling apart.

She paused halfway to the doors with her head held high and her back straight, but she didn't turn towards us. "I really don't wanna do this right now," she said her voice just above a whisper, " No offense."

"I understand, believe me it's not something any of us are looking forward to." She took a deep sigh as her shoulders slumped forward a bit.

She straightened her back and turned toward the table with her head held high. I flinched from the high pitch sound her chair made as she roughly pulled it out and took a seat making eye contact with Scott. Her face was blank of any and all emotion. She didn't know that she was challenging Scott by keeping eye contact and he knew she didn't know.

When no one spoke for few minutes Lilli surprised me by calmly saying, "Let's talk."
