CHAPTER 4 -
Jess came out shortly after me and we started heading toward school. I'd been to the school a couple times before when I was here on vacation to see some of the games.
“I hate starting a new school,” I stated loudly from the front seat to no one in particular. My mom liked to move around a lot, at least every couple of years, which gave me a pretty good understanding of what being the new kid felt like.
“It won't be that bad,” Patrick said, pulling the massive truck into a spot in the student parking lot. I glanced around, making note of the people gathered in different spots of the parking lot. He shut off the truck while Jess and I hopped out in unison and made our way to the front of the truck.
“I'm gonna walk Lilli to the office, alright, so we’ll see ya later.” Jess looked at Patrick, giving him that buzz-off look.
He scoffed at her attempt to get rid of him. “Yeah, okay, if you guys need anything come find me.” He turned without putting up much more of a fight to meet up with a group of guys and a few girls that were already walking his way.
“You have to teach me how to do that,” I said, elbowing Jess lightly. “I mean, I know of other ways to make him disappear, but that was easy.”
“I honestly don't know why he didn't insist on tagging along,” she replied in a bored tone. “Come on; let’s go get your schedule.” As we started towards the front of the school, I noticed how many people were staring me.
“Jess, do I have something on my face?”
“What?” she asked, turning to look at me. “No, why would you ask that?”
“Well, then why is everyone looking at me like I have dirt on my face?” She looked around as if she was just noticing everyone’s reaction towards me. Jess opened her mouth a few times like a fish but no words came out.
“W-w-we don’t get a lot of new people in town, you know how that is. Our parents only mentioned you were moving in with us to a few of their friends. Patrick and I told some of the people we hang out with, but other than that, nobody really knows.” I eyed her suspiciously, thinking over what she had just said. Yes, it was true people didn’t move here on an everyday basis, but this was not the reaction I was looking forward to getting.
I’m already on edge with everything else going on in my life, and now I have to worry about going through the rest of the day with people staring at me.
“It’s because you’re the new girl, trust me. Don’t let it bother you, just ignore them. Come on,” Jess whispered to me, pulling me out of my thoughts.
Finding the office wasn't all that hard. Jess grabbed the handle and opened the door for me to go in first.
“Good morning, girls, how can I help you,” a short, chubby, older woman asked from behind the front desk.
“Umm, I'm new and I’m here to get my schedule,” I replied politely.
“What’s your name?”
“Lilli Williamson."
“Just give me one second; I'm having it printed out now.” She looked up, giving me a warm smile.
“Do you think we'll have any classes together?” Jess turned to me asking.
“I don't know. I hope so. I mean, we've never been in the same school together; I think it would be kind of cool if we did, ya know?” I looked over to her and she was smiling back at me.
