The hospital was too bright, too loud. Addy had a migraine worse than anything she'd ever had and it felt like her head might split open from the sheer force of it. The machines hooked to leads which in turn hooked to stickers attached to her skin, she felt gross even though her skin smelt of antiseptic wash. Her eyes swept the room and latched onto two sleeping figures huddled on a chair barely big enough for the two of them. Her boys. They'd come. Bucky's head was tucked into Steve's shoulder, their legs tangled together as they struggled to remain on the chair, comfort was not a necessity right now. She shifted, digging her hands into the bed to haul herself upright a little more but then she moved her left leg and swore so loudly both Steve and Bucky jumped to their feet half sleep and swaying as they tried to figure out what was wrong. “Fuck happened to my leg?” she hissed, teeth clenched in a bid to hold in her scream that threatened to spill out. Steve hit the call button summoning a nurse who gave Addy a good dose of morphine before turning to address all three of them. “Addilyn had suffered several breaks from her ankle to her thigh, as it turned out our initial diagnosis was quite out of line and the injury wasn't as severe and we apologise for that. We expect ten weeks general recovery with no walking at all permitted, after that time we suggest physio. When she is able to come home she will be given a measured dose of pain medicine which we will give to whomever will be her carer during her recovery. Any questions?” the nurse stated in a voice that suggested she wasn't to be questioned about her opinion on the matter of Addy and her recovery. Later that day when Addy was released from the hospital still high on pain meds she grumbled, unable to walk she had to use a wheelchair since crutches simply weren't an option now her leg was in a cast all the way to her upper thigh. They entered their apartment building and saw once again the elevator was out of order leaving Addy frustrated and embarrassed when she realised one of the others would have to carry her like a child up the three flights of steps. Bucky came to the realisation quicker than Addy had and before he even knew what he was doing, he'd scooped her into his arms and began making his way up the stairs leaving Steve to bring the wheelchair and Addy’s bag. Feeling her so close was like lighting a candle in his heart, a small yet very definite flame flickering brightly. She didn't smell like herself though, she smelt like a hospital with all their disinfectant and antibiotics which was off-putting since Bucky had only just gotten used to her smelling like flowers and candy. They reached their apartment in no time and Steve unlocked the door and stepped back so that Bucky could set Addy down on the couch where she could watch television and be comfortable. Bucky saw Steve nodding his head at the kitchen though his attempt at being subtle wasn't very good considering even Addy clued on what he was trying to say. Eventually it was Bucky and Steve hiding in the kitchen speaking in whispers so Addy wouldn't hear. “She's going to get pretty annoyed having to rely on us for everything so I was going to go out and grab some things to keep her occupied, Natasha was just saying something the other day about adult colouring books being therapeutic and a good way to de-stress…. Did you want me to grab you anything while I'm there?” Steve said as he ran a hand through his sandy hair looking as if he could use an adult colouring book for himself, Bucky thought for a moment wondering what he would normally say if Steve had asked this question but nothing came to mind. “Maybe a cookbook? One of those easy recipe ones, it will help her stress less if she's eating some good food while she's healing” Bucky said thoughtfully and Steve smiled thinking this was a great idea. “I'll be back soon” he promised as he left, Addy mumbling a sleepy goodbye as the door shut with a definitive click. Bucky wandered back to the living room where Addy was now lying on the couch, her eyes nearly completely closed despite the TV loudly playing the local news channel. “Buck? Do ya wanna come cuddle?” she asked sleepily all the while patting the tiny sliver of couch beside her where he would most certainly not fit. “I won't fit in there with you Doll” he replied, surprising himself with how casually he had spoken the term of endearment. “Please” she begged and stretched her arms out for him, all she wanted was to wrap herself around him and sleep until she could get this wretched hunk of plaster off her leg. Bucky sat on the floor by her head and took her arm to wind it around his neck hoping that would be enough and within five minutes she was asleep snoring lightly and calm as anything. Bucky didn't dare move, Addy needed her sleep and something in him needed this, the physical contact. He loved the fact she needed him all though he hated she was hurt and in pain. The news droned on in the background and Bucky fell asleep right there on the floor feeling more loved and wanted than he ever had.
