When we are sure that the van is gone, we all anxiously rip off our blind folds and stare into the desert terrain. The mountains in the distance taunt us as we search for civilization.

" Where are we?" Mom said.

" I-I don't know" dad replies, with a crazed look in his eyes.

We shield our eyes from the sheets of sand that came over us. We trudge on, with no actual idea as to where we were heading. Hawks scream overhead and stare down at us as if to say that we had no way of surviving. Water or food is nowhere to be seen. My father leads the way and I follow with my brother and my mom in the back. Beside me I hear a horrified shriek as my mother nearly loses balance and feels a sharp pain in her right leg's shin. My father comes over, asking if we're all okay. My mom petrified on the sandy ground, sat. A piercing red spot appeared on her leg. The scorpion calmly climbs off her leg and burrows itself under the grainy sand. The scorpion was a brilliant, pale shade of brown. My dad, ripped a piece of his sleeve and rapped it securely around the injured part of her shin. My dad happened to have gotten a glimpse of the scorpion before it completely disappeared under the sand.

" That scorpion species is not harmful to humans by any means. The most it will do is produce a bee-sting like reaction in her. It's extremely painful but not life-threatening." Dad exclaimed.

My mother appears to be in a temporary state of shock that would probably fade within an hour or so. We moved forward as the sun dims and starts to lower itself beyond the horizon. We slow our pace and eventually stop at a clearing in the desert. Mother has come out of her shock by then and has become really tired. She lays her head against a rock and instantly falls into a deep sleep. My brother, Tom joins her and decides to call it a day. I, being four years older than my brother decided that I'd show my sense of leadership and come up with a plan. We have exactly 48 hours before we become debilitated from lack of food and water. My dad and I, sit next to each other letting out a big sigh signifying the end of what has become the scariest day of my life.

"I don't know who they are or what they want from us but I do know, that we are going to survive our trip through the desert."

We sat around conversing and pondering on what had happened to us, for we feared that we wouldn't find a way to survive in this desert, although we both decided that we truly would give it our all. All we could see are mounds of sand and mountains in the distance. Both my dad and I, thought that getting to the other side of the mountain would give us a possible source of water. The mountains are the only thing that stood in our way, but from the view, the mountains didn't seem all that tall or far at all. The most it could be is about 25 miles which could be traveled if we all set our minds to it. Mother's situation with the scorpion sting might leave her quite debilitated and in a sense almost immobile, meaning that traveling past the mountain wouldn't be an easy task for us all. I told dad we better get our rest for tomorrow's walk and he agreed intently hurrying to the area where my brother and my mom lay. We slept hoping for a better day, tomorrow, we hoped for a sense of hope for our family and most importantly we hoped for a strategy to escape from the place where they had left us.
