WEEK 4

“Awww, I think I sprint my ankle" Ariana from the school team cries out

“We should help her now, someone should get some ice around here" Vanessa speaks running to help Ariana get up

“Captain we need the first aid box" Bethany calls out

“Just shut up everyone! I didn't wake up this early to come babysit some lazy ass wannabe queen. If you are that fragile, you should give up the game for modeling" I shout leaving my teammates on the pitch.

I had to make it to the pitch for 6:45 am as the captain of the team on coach Lance order that makes fifteen minutes before my teammates and ten minutes before coach Lance arrives and now some little spoilt girls just ruined my training. I feel bad that I had to talk to my teammates that way, but I feel worse for having to waste my whole training session.

**********

News of my attitude towards my teammates earlier this morning had already spread round the walls of GHS. Students gather in twos and threes whenever I get pass them to talk about what had happened on the pitch. Oh my, what have I done to myself I thought walking down to the rest room.

“Loner" one voice calls out

“Fag!" another added

“Beauty without brains" yet another voice
Well at least, someone thinks I am beautiful.

“Hey Kylie, the principal wants to see you in his office" Will calls out from behind

“Oh... I will do that as soon as am done in the restroom" I reply while Will leaves before I complete my sentence.

Will is one of the most popular and arguably the hottest guy in school and he's in 10th grade. He has been dating Laura since she was in 5th grade. He so much seem like a player to me but he has never cross my part. Sometimes, I wonder why Laura had to be with him of all the good looking boys in school, I have to answer the principal right now.

**********

“What is this thing I hear around the school that a student almost lost her life while training for basketball today?" The principal asks coach Lance who I meet standing before him like someone who's been queried in the principal's office.

“I learnt you changed the team's playing style in regards of the forthcoming competition. How many times do you have to be told that no matter how hard you try, you cannot get into that competition, it's meant for the pro's and we don't have them here. The school is fine with the local competitions we get to win on yearly basis rather than  train 5 years for a competiton we're never qualifying for" the principal speaks angrily.

“Am deeply sorry sir, such won't happen again" coach Lance replies

“Sorry? Is that all you plan to say to the judge after you get a student killed? And where is the captain of the team I sent for?" the principal ask angrily

“I'm....am here sir" I reply looking down

“Oh.....you are the one that almost got a student killed right?"

“Ehm....no sir...it was a...."

“Let it be the first and the last time this would happen, the next time you face me, you will have to face the penalty" the principal cuts in before I finished speaking

“Am sorry sir" I reply shakily

“Both of you can leave my office, just try not to get anyone killed over some useless game" the principal demands while coach Lance and I both leaves his office.

“See me in my office now" coach speaks leaving me in front of the principal's office. I probably shouldn't have neglected my teammate like that, I can't even tell what came over me, the whole qualifying thing has gotten into my head, am I starting to loose my humanity? Coach must be waiting, I really have to join him now.

**********

I finally find the coach in his office moving from one side to another speaking softly while wearing an angry face. “Can I come in coach?"

“You didn't need to ask, did you? You could have dropped the formalities too since you don't care about nothing!" coach replies angrily

“I'm sorry coach, I was too exhausted to think straight, I was so lost in the game, am truly sorry" I apologize

“Sympathy! sympathy was all you needed. You're not a doctor, no one expects you to administer some treatment, all you needed to do was to show you care" coach responded

“Yes coach...I know, everything happened suddenly and am sorry I didn't act right"

“Oh!...no problems...and that is why you will cease from being the captain starting from this moment, hand over everything placed in your care to Laura and tell her to resume responsibility immediately"

“But coach, you don't mean....I just said am sorry"

“You heard the principal right, sorry changes nothing, that's my decision as the coach and you will obey if you still want a space in the team. You can leave now" coach adds without looking at my face.

He seems very angry, of course I can tell. The walk from the principal office to my class where I handed over power as captain of the team to Laura was the most disappointing walk of my life. I felt shame and guilt, it felt like something I treasured had been lost. I wasn't really happy with the whole being captain thing, but now that I've lost it, I felt empty and I discovered it has been my motivation these past weeks. Handing over power wasn't the only awkward thing I felt, apologizing to Ariana in the presence of her friends too seemed like I was in hell, well she has a good heart, she forgave me easily. I can walk away from all that now right? Yes, it the end of classes for the day, I will just have to do my lone walk to the bustop today.
