SUNDAY

I barely had to slices of bread and mayonnaise before setting out to visit Laura at the hospital this morning.

“Mom, I'm visiting a friend at the hospital, I think I'll miss father's teaching at church today"

“Oh sweet.... I hope it nothing serious? My regards to the friend of yours"

“Alright mom bye" I say fetching my purse from the table leaving the house

“See you later dear" mom responds

**********

It took me about thirty five minutes to get to the hospital and force my way to Laura's ward since the nurses wouldn't allow me see her. I was surprised to find the coach at the hospital having a chat with the doctor beside Laura laying still like she was in coma.

“Coach, you're here"

“Who are you by the way and who allowed you here?" the doctor ask

“Oh it fine. She's with me"

“Oh... Well you've to adhere to our instructions if you value the life our your loved one. I only asked you in here so that you can know the state of things and how importantly she needs this fluid. I'll have to walk both of you out now while you find a solution to this"

The doctor walks coach and I out of Laura's ward. I couldn't even see her properly neither was I able to touch her too. It was so painful to see Laura who's always full of life laying helplessly on the sick bed.

“I got a call from the principal to come see the doctor as regarding an emergency from the hospital. We tried to reach Laura's parent but was only able to reach her dad who's out of the country and the soonest he can get here is in 15hours time. And the same goes for her mum who can only get here fastest in 13hours time from a business trip, plus she's hypertensive and her father has ordered we don't tell her" the coach explains

“But....but she'll be fine right?" I ask

“Yes, if only she gets a compatible blood into her body in 5hours time. She has an underlying ailment and needs to get a new fluid into her body before it gets worse" coach reply

“So....so you mean, Max is clean? Max didn't hurt her?"

“Well, she would have fallen out anyways, we should even be thankful Max triggered that. She could have fallen at her house where there would have been no one to help her and the story might be different now" coach adds

“What happens now coach?"

“We need a donor Kylie, a compatible one"

It's been three hours now and we are yet to get a donor. We've tried all the possible means and non seem to work. We can't even get through Laura's dad anymore, he's on a flight back to Ohio right now. It less than two hours now before Laura's case gets worse, her boyfriend is here, but his blood type doesn't match Laura's and there is only little he can do. Now that I think about it, Laura's fate lies in my hand, I think I will have to do this but this can't go down well with mom.

“I'll do it coach"

“Kylie? Are you....."

“Are you really willing to do it?" Will ask

“My blood group matches her...I can't let her die right?" I ask rhetorically

“But your mum...." coach chips in

“Yes... Yes coach, my mom, you would have to talk to her" I plead

“Oh me?? That's gon' be hard. Just about some weeks back I had to convince her about letting you play basketball and....."

“Yeah coach, I know right" I cut in

“It gon' be hard.... But I will give it a shot" coach concludes

**********

Coach has been on the phone with my mom for the past ten minutes, coach moves far away from Will and I to have the conversation with my mom but the look on coach's face doesn't look like they are having a decent conversation. Yeah, I know my mom is overprotective and reacts overboard to almost anything that cones her way, but she's a mom and I don't think any mom would be willing to consent to what I was about to do just like that.

“Come over here Kylie, she wants you on the line" coach calls out to me

Not like I wasn't expecting this. I just hope this doesn't get harder than it should go.

“Hello mom"

“What! Kylie?"

“Yeeesss mom"

“Are you out of your senses? What is it that I hear you want to do"

“Mom? you need to calm down, am trying to save a life here, you told me to always show empathy and never end up being a coward like dad. He turned his back on family and left us halfway.....I don't wanna turn my back on family. Laura is family to me, she's one of the few friends have got in high school"

“Oh my baby, my baby, you've grown more than I thought. Are you sure about this?"

“Yes, yes mom, I'll be fine. Am sorry, am sorry I've to bring dad up in this. Am sorry I talked to you that way"

“No baby. It alright. You just reminded me of the past I need to embrace if i'm ever gon' go over it. I'll pray for you and your friend and tell father to pray for both of you too"

“Thanks mom. I love you"

“I love you too my baby. Take care of yourself. Now give the phone back to your coach"

Of course coach has to face my crazy mom again if she's totally going to accept me donating my blood to someone she barely knows. But do I care, coach will have to talk to her again, at least am happy that I can help.
**********
I finally get to donate my blood. It wasn't as easy as I thought, from the needle piercing my skin to me seeing my blood passed into Laura's body wasn't fun at all. But am happy it all over now.

“Father.... Why do you have to come down here?"

“Is that a proper way to welcome father and thank him for his prayers?."

“Am sorry mom, I just thought it wasn't necessary bringing father down here. Welcome father, I appreciate all of your prayers, see, am fine"
(Everyone laughs)

“I know dear. I just came to see my little Kylie for myself" father replies

Father has always referred to me as my little Kylie since when I could remember, am used to it now anyways. Doesn't all seem bad, just that am grown now. LOL!

“Alright! I don't mean to spoil the family reunion thing and all, but I have to say thank you to Kylie, and also her mom for giving us the privilege to do this, Laura should be fine in less than 48hours. Thanks to everyone, I've got other patient to attend to" the doctor says leaving us to attend to other patients.
