Despite the fact that Charlotte found the idea of a dominant guy sexy and had become quite obsessed with reading fiction in which a relationship had a male Dom/ female sub dynamic, she was aware that one of her characteristics was her love of her independence and a seeming need to be in control of situations, two things which might be threatened by having a dominant boyfriend. And so she had tried to imagine /herself/ as the dominant one in a relationship. The boy would be respectful, maybe sweet and kind, maybe serious and intense about being submissive. She sometimes imagined giving this kind of guy a pet collar and had even imagined asking for him to address her as 'Her Highness'. She imagined being assertive, confident, not a softie or a pushover. She had imagined feeling in control and almost powerful in a scene involving the boy on his knees at her feet.

For some reason, Madonna's song 'Die another day' helped her better imagine the character of a dominatrix.
