Chapter 5Between traveling, time zones, and Dalton waking me up early, my sleep schedule had been basically ruined. So I was asleep when my dad left again at 6:30 that night. I honestly have no idea how he manages to work so many shifts, just the thought of it makes me tired. All of the early mornings seemed to have taken a toll on Dalton too, because he didn't come over that night like he usually does. Unfortunately, falling asleep at 6:30pm didn't really work out, because I woke up at 3:30am. Not exactly an ideal time to be awake, but I guess that's just how things go. I decided to just listen to a bunch of music and catch up on some reading since I had time to kill. Once I considered it to be a reasonable time of day, I called Dalton. Apparently he didn't think that 6:30am was a reasonable time, but I convinced him to come over anyway. While I was waiting I made some chocolate chip pancakes and set out some movies. What better way to apologize for waking Dalton up early than food and a Back to the Future marathon?
I finished making the last of the pancakes as Dalton stumbled through the front door.
"Why are you up so early?" He grumbled. "And how are you in such a good mood at seven o'clock?"
"Well between traveling and your random trips to abandoned theatres, I was over tired and fell asleep at six-thirty last night, and I can't sleep forever like you can, so I woke up crazy early this morning." I explained. Dalton just nodded his head, not particularly interested. "I made you chocolate chip pancakes to make up for getting you up so early though, and I've got all of the Back to the Future movies in the living room." Dalton perked up as soon as I mentioned the food.
"I love you so much!" He yelled picking me up and spinning you around, making me laugh. "You can wake me up as early as you want," he said enthusiastically before piling a bunch of pancakes onto a plate and drowning them in syrup. We made our way into the living room and turned on the first movie.
When the credits started rolling, Dalton looked over at me. "We should do that," he said, completely serious.
"Time travel and jeopradize our existence?" I asked with a straight face. Dalton decided to ignore my comment and continued with his train of thought. "We should go on a road trip."
"What does that have to do with Back to the Future?" I asked, thoroughly confused at this point.
"Nothing, it just gave me the idea," He replied. "But I really do think that we should go on a road trip. We could get away from everybody for a while. It would just be you and me, and I don't know, I just think it would be cool." He finished.
"I'm not opposed to the idea or anything, but you do realize that there is no way that my dad would let me go on a road trip, right?" I asked.
Dalton's face fell a little when I said that, but he still wasn't completely discouraged. "What if we just went and didn't tell him?" he asked. "I'm sure my mom and sophie would cover for us."
The idea still seemed crazy, but was more appealing every second. My dad probably wouldn't even realize that I was gone as long as I answered my phone. I hadn't seen him even once since I had gotten back from New York. "Ok," I said, Dalton's face little up with an enormous smile. "But I want to take the test to get my liscense before we leave."
"But that will take forever because your dad never took you driving so the only hours you have are the one's you got driving with my mom, and the one's from driver's ed," Dalton pouted as he tried to negotiate with me.
"When I was in New York my grandparents let me drive everywhere so I finished all of my hours. I just need to go down to the DMV and take my test." I needed my dad to sign to let me get my liscense still. That was going to be the tricky part, but I didn't want to go on this road trip without one and make Dalton drive the whole time if he didn't have to. We had a little under two months left of summer before we started our year, and Dalton's roadtrip idea seemed like the best way to spend it.
"Ok, but can you call your dad so you can go down to the DMV and get it soon?" Dalton asked.
"Yep, I'll call him right now. Then we should probably make a list of things we need to take and map out the roads we wanna take." I said. Dalton agreed and said that he would start on the mapping part while I called my dad. As soon as he ran out to his truck to grab a map I dialed my dad's number.
"Hello?" He answered the phone.
"Hey Dad, it's Kaitlyn." I answered.
"Hi honey, I'm sorry but I can't talk long, I've got another patient I need to go see."
"That's ok Dad. I was just wondering if you could take me down to the DMV? Maybe tomorrow? I finished all of my hours when I was in New York and I want to go take the test and get my liscense." I said, forcing myself not to talk to quickly.
"Yeah, okay. I don't have to work tomorrow morning so we can go then, and then we can grab lunch and catch up." He said, seeming more into the idea than I had anticipated.
"Alright, sounds great! What time should I be ready?" I asked excitedly.
"8 o'clock, in case we have to wait. I have to go now Kaitlyn, I'll talk to you in the morning, okay?"
"Okay Dad, see you in the morning." I hung up and practically skipped into the kitchen. Dalton looked up from the road map that he was making circles on and smiled.
"I take it he said 'yes'," Dalton laughed.
"Yep," I coudn't stop smiling, and it seemed to amuse Dalton. Before he could laugh at me any more I walked over to the map and helped circle more places to visit.
