Eugene carefully stepped through the door frame broken plexiglass half scattered half swept into a neat pile with a cracked plastic dustpan next to the counter he nearly walked into while looking around the abandoned cafe he found.
He casually picked up the broom off of the floor and finished sweeping up the plastic window substitute and threw the shards away in the trash can that had a plastic Wal-Mart sack in it for a trash bag.
After smiling proudly at his good deed he put the cleaning supplies away and turned to find you standing there watching his painfully precise movements.
He stumbled backwards at your sudden appearance and fell through the doorframe. He squeaked in surprise and tightly shut his eyes waiting for the impact of biting gravel and cement but it never came.
Once he felt warmth on his lower back and heard an exhale of relief did he dare open his brown eyes to find himself staring into your e/c ones. You had realized that you wrapped an arm around the lower half of his torso and caught you both by grabbing on to the doorframe.
Unfortunately for you the impact of hitting the wood cause more plexiglass to rain down on the two of you clicking and bouncing on the floor. You noticed a slight blush creeping on to his face and he looked away clearly flustered.
Once you help him stand on his own again, and without him noticing you take a small step back finding out that your face was slowly heating up. He got the courage to look at you once again but your eyes shied away from his gaze as you smiled a small bit and cleared your throat.
Just as you expected it came out rough and gravelly from months of disuse but you had managed to ask a few questions. "May I ask why you are here?" You questioned looking up at his pale freckled face which happened to still be dusted in a light pink blush.
He responded in a surprisingly low tone that reminded you of chocolate. It was smooth and deep which reminded you of the dark chocolate bar in your pocket.
"I actually was on patrol with my group..." He trailed off and smacked his forehead. "The group! I totally forgot about them! Laurence will have my head for this!" He rambled on about a Zion and Ethan before you spoke.
"C-can I come with you to your group? I-I have a map of places that haven't been searched and I..." Tears started to well up in your eyes at the thought of staying alone while others were helping each other.
You faked being emotional you figured it would catch him off guard. You figured it was working by the look of sadness on his face and smiled internally.
"I have lots of food! W-we could all share and..." You trailed off once more as his brown eyes bore into your e/c ones. "I'm just terrifi- er tired of being alone." You mentally cursed at almost admitting a fake weakness to a total stranger. Well not really a stranger, since you had been in his classes since preschool but you never really talked before or so you thought.
After a painful moment of silence he spoke. "Sure, er I mean I'm sure they will welcome you! uh..." Despite knowing your name he waited for you to say it. He didn't know why but whenever you spoke it made him want to sit and listen for hours. "Y/n" you supplied a few moments after he trailed off.
His eyes lit up "Y/n from S/n?" He questioned you. "Yeah that's me..." You responded quietly messing with your tattered school uniform jacket. "I'm Eugene from your homeroom and band classes." You finally recognized him"Oh Eugene! Sorry I didn't recognize you sooner!" You apologized. He shrugged "I'm sure it's almost time to meet up with my group patrol. You have everything packed up?"
You nodded as you two picked up some bags and headed to the main part of the plaza. This was going to be an even more interesting apocalypse, especially since you saved your crush from falling on his ass.
