Sarah's POV
It was now almost two thirty, she had been driving since ten and hadn't stopped at all. She couldn't beilive this was really happening. She didn't ask Susane for the details, she wanted to find out herself when she arrived.
The five hours felt like days, she really wanted to get there soon. When she finally pulled into the driveway she ran straight for the barn where she knew everyone would be.
Susane saw her coming and gave her a sympathetic look.
Sarah didn't stop runnning until she was standing over Comet's unmoving body. She fell to her knees and stroked his face and his ears went forward. All Susane had said was that Comet was dying, she didn't know why or how, but she didn't care. She couldn't lose Comet, not after everything they had been through together.
He was her first horse, and she had raised him herself. She had won her first horse show on Comet. He was only nine years old. She stared down at his light grey coat with white specks across his back. His large brown eyes stared up at her like they were begging her to do something, but she didn't know what to do. She looked up at the vet.
"As you can see Comet has an eye tumor, which is a form of cancer. Unfortunately it can not be treated."
She looked down with blurry eyes at the pink ball bulging from Comet's left eye.
"I'm sorry." She cried and rested her cheek agaisnt his.
She sniffed "Is he suffering."
"Probably not right now, I just gave him a pain killer shot. I'm very sorry, but it would be best to humanly euthinize him."
"No, please there has to be something you can do." She was crying so much she couldn't see and it felt like someone was repeatedly stabbing her heart with a knife while tearing it apart at the same time.
"I'm very sorry. I can give you three more days, but any longer and he will suffer."
She nodded her head, and laid her head on Comets shoulder and rubbed his long neck with her hand.
"I will be back in an hour, again I'm very sorry."
The vet got into her car and left.
Sarah felt a hand on her shoulder and brushed it away.
"Come on sweetie, you need to get some rest." Her moms voice was shaking, as if she was scared of what would happen next.
"No, I'm not leaving him."
Her mother knew it was no use to argue so she patted her back, and went back up to the house. Susane came and sat beside her.
"I'm sorry."
"Can I be alone for a while." She sniffed.
She saw the hurt look in Susane's eyes, but she really needed to be alone.
Suasane left, and Sarah started talking quietly to Comet who was to weak to stand. The vet would be back in an hour with a sling to get the pressure off of his internal organs. She mostly just apoligized, but she also told him about her kids, and Harry and everything she should have told him earlier.
Alot of people thought she was crazy for talking to a horse, but she found it calming. She was still crying an hour later when her mom brought her some dinner.
"Are you okay?"
She didn't really feel like talking so she didn't. In fact she didn't talk to anyone for the next two days, not even Susane. Comet was the only one she talked to.
