the one where irene meets a stranger

"what the hell is that?"

"go back to your planet!"

"roach!"

these were the remarks that kim taehyung would get on a daily basis. whether he was at school, eating at a diner, or scrolling his instagram.

taehyung is different from humans. he is a starhavenite from starhaven. since the air in over there became toxic, taehyung forced to move to earth, having a little to none knowledge on earth's system.

he had to figure out how earth's society works—how to use money, how to drive a car, how to use a phone. thanks to an friend of his, who is also an alien, taehyung learned how to survive on earth.

but discrimination was something he was able to conquer. he was often ridiculed for his looks. he has peculiar features surrounding his eyes along with some super abilities that he forgot to use.

today was nothing more than a typical day. taehyung was walking down the street, ignoring the insults that were being shouted at him.

"hey roach!" he heard a voice yell. then he felt several nudges push him around.

it was the college football team from his school and are also anti-alien people.

"you know why you're called roach? " the quarterback asked pulling him into an alley. he ruffled taehyung's hair roughly. taehyung continued to keep his head low and ignore the comments.

"because," the quarterback said, "you invested this planet like a roach. and the only way to get rid of roaches is to kill them." he kept moving closer to taehyung, making taehyung lay on some garbage bags.

in that moment, taehyung was frozen in fear. this was it. this was going to be his last memory on earth. all he did was close his eyes and accepted his fate.

"hey!" a voice called. the punch that taehyung was waiting to hit his face didn't come. he opened his eyes and saw a girl with long black hair.

"irene, what are you doing here?"

"you need to back off."

"irene, seriously. move!"

"did i stutter? back. off." her tone was serious and so was her face. taehyung just stared at her in awe as she talked to the football players.

the football boys just scoffed and walked away.

"i'm not going to hurt you," she said calmly, holding out her hand. he graciously took it and continued to stare at the mysterious girl. irene pulled a wooden crate to sit on as she talked to the alien boy.

"aren't you scared of me?" he queried.

"why? because you're different?"

"yeah. didn't you hear? i'm a roach." he sighed.

"so? you're different. you're still a person. why should i treat you differently?"

taehyung was very surprised that irene didn't act like everyone else. she didn't think he looked funny, she thought of him as a person.

"what's your name?" she asked him.

"i'm taehyung. you're irene?"

she nodded.

"um, do you wanna get something to drink? i know a great bar," she asked. taehyung couldn't help but smile at her action.

"yeah. that'd be really nice."

taehyung and irene bonded over drinks and stories. there were many laughs and smiles throughout the night. taehyung thought she was extraordinary and her laughs were music to his ears. it warmed his heart how kind she was to him.

"irene, i had a really good time. do you think we could do this again? but maybe, over a candlelit dinner?" taehyung asked.

"yeah. i'd really like that," she said with a smile on her face.
