Chapter One.
I draw in a slow and steady deep breath as I pace across my bedroom for the hundredth time in the past ten minutes. I am graduating from High School in a few short hours. Patiently I have counted down the days to this exact moment. I made it my goal my freshman year to be the Valedictorian of Chicago Hills High, and here I am today standing with my speech neatly written in my hand.
My tan skin begins to tingle and I feel sick to my stomach. I hope my parents like my speech I keep thinking over and over again. They have made it very clear to me that I must be perfect with every aspect of my life. Perfect grades, perfect clothes, and now a perfect speech.
This speech is important not only to me and my graduating class, but mostly to my mom and dad. Out of seven kids I am the first to accomplish such an achievement. My brothers and sisters call me the shining star of the family. I earned that nickname the day I gave in to my parents tactics and agreed to go to college to study law.
My twin sister Rayne is also suiting up in a cap and gown tonight and I could not be more excited for her. Her grades were hanging on by a tiny little thread near the end of this last semester. But with my help and a few all nighters she pulled through and will be receiving her diploma tonight right by my side. I could only imagine my parents faces if they found out she was not graduating high school. They would be incredibly embarrassed, and never speak to her again.
Rayne could care less about the graduating ceremony tonight. She is patiently waiting for the after party, and when I say after party it's not the lame dinner party my parents are putting on for us tonight. I am going to half to do a lot of convincing to get her to show up to the dinner. My parents will have a fit if she does not make an appearance.
Rayne brings out the darkest side of our parents. She knows how to get there blood to boil. Everything Rayne does, she does out of spite. She loves nothing more than pissing off my parents. I cannot help but laugh at her tactics. The things she does sometimes makes me think we are not at all twins let alone related. We may look identical, but our personalities are worlds apart.
Every day I wake up and wish that I was more like my twin. Rayne has such a fire and zest about her that just draws people to her. She is sarcastic, brutally honest, and has her self all figured out. Confidence bounces off her skin. I truly envy how self-assured she is, and I am hoping that going away to college will help me open up and learn more about myself.
Since I can remember my soul focus on life has been about satisfying my mother and father. Growing up I saw my parents constantly disappointed at my older siblings. I did not want to see the look of dismay on their faces any longer and I became, as Rayne would say 'The absolute perfect daughter'.
My bed room door slams bringing me out of my thoughts. Rayne shuffles in to the room with pursed lips and anger in her eyes."Let me guess. Michelle and Devon are forcing you to go to the so called dinner party they are throwing for us?" I can not help the obvious amusement in my voice.
"Harley it is not funny!"She attempts to muffle her giggles. "I have zero desire to go. These so called dinners are the definition of fucking hell on earth." She rants dramatically as her body falls back on to my recently made bed.
"You are going!" I pout my lips at her, " You can not make me go through the torture all alone." As soon as the words leave my mouth her lips curve in to her devilish grin I have become to know to well.
"Sissy. Do not give me that look. You know I hate that look!" I warn her hoping that whatever idea she is tossing around in her pretty little brain fades away.
"I will go to this god awful dinner thing Michelle and Devon are throwing for us," She rolls her eyes and adds "If you go to Ty Daniels party with me afterward."
