Chapter 4

As I am looking at myself in the dress shop's changing room, I realise that I haven't been to a school dance in ages. We had one last year but I didn't go because I could not face Jake with his new girlfriend.

Their relationship only lasted three weeks, but I was hurting a lot at the time and couldn't face the fact that he was happy and I was still lost in a whirlwind of old and new emotions which mixed together like the sand and sea.

Before last year, the last dance we had was in the last year of middle school, but it was a bit lame, now looking back. I kind of envy that I can't go back in time to three years ago though. Everything was so careless and easy. No dramas, no boys and no catfights.

Lost in thought, I don't hear the sales assistant asking me if I like the dress I'm wearing. I've tried on about five by now, yet none of them seem right. Either the colours don't mesh well or the dress is cut too high or too low.

As she repeats herself I try to muster a, "Not yet but I will keep looking!" without trying to seem rude.

"Just as I thought." She starts and I begin to think that she is a very rude woman, however she continues with, "That's why I found one more dress! I simply won't understand you if you don't like it. It fits your description of the ideal dress perfectly."

Hope bubbles up inside of me but when I see it on the hanger, but it looks plain and blunt. It is simply blue with blue flowery lace, covering the plain material.

Nonetheless, I try it on. I'm surprised that I actually like it. The spaghetti straps which hold the dress up, hang at a medium length creating a perfect cleavage. The fact that it is not too long shows off my legs and the sky blue colour complements my cool skin tone.

Full of joy, I shout out, "I'm taking it." And I can hear the sales assistant laughing.

As the week goes by, there are rumours about who is going with who and whether they rejected or accepted the question of going to the dance.

Becca is over the moon because Bruno asked her out and she can't stop talking about what she will wear. I am a bit disappointed  because I have no-one to go with but if all fails, I'll just third-wheel with Becca and Bruno although I don't think Becca will like it.

Soon enough Friday arrives. The night of the dance.
