The Harlem Renaissance was a period of time in the 1920's when Black writers, musicians, artists, and actors celebrated a rebirth of their culture. This boom of the arts was located in Harlem, New York. One of the great factors leading up to this was the Great Migration; a time where African Americans traveled to larger cities to get jobs.

There were many different types of artists during this period of time. Musicians are more commonly known. With this movement, African American music unexpectedly became popular worldwide. The blues and jazz music set the overall tone of this renaissance. Being a writer during this time could be controversial. They didn't bring back their roots, they wanted to share what things were like. Over time the importance of the writers was seen.
